The Mom Test
How to talk to customers and learn if your business is a good idea when everyone is lying to you

What it's about
Rob Fitzpatrick argues that most customer conversations are worthless because founders unconsciously fish for compliments and customers unconsciously give them. He offers a discipline for asking questions that reveal facts about a customer's past behavior rather than opinions about a hypothetical future product. The book mattered because it converted vague startup advice like 'talk to your customers' into a specific, testable technique, giving early-stage founders a way to catch bad ideas before writing code or raising money.
Reading plan
Pick a finish date and Genius lays out the days — the plan shows today's target and keeps you honest.
Read together
Start a circle and share the code — everyone sees everyone's honest place in the book. Accountability, not leaderboards.
Who it's for
- First-time founders about to build a product based on assumptions they haven't tested - Product managers who run customer interviews that always seem to confirm the roadmap - Anyone raising money or pitching who mistakes polite interest for validated demand
What’s inside
- 1The Test Itself1 min
A question is only useful if it would survive being asked to your own mother, who loves you and wants to protect your feelings, meaning it must ask about her life, not your idea.
- 2Opinions Are Worthless, Facts Are Gold1 min
Customers cannot reliably predict their own future behavior, so any answer about what they 'would' do is noise, not signal.
- 3Ask About the Past, Not the Future1 min
Replacing every future-tense question with a past-tense one is the single most reliable technique for getting honest data.
- 4Anchor Every Claim to Money, Time, or Reputation1 min
An interest that hasn't cost the customer anything is not yet a validated interest, so you must push conversations toward what they have already spent.
- 5Run Interviews Without a Pitch1 min
Describing your product idea before you've gathered facts contaminates the conversation and makes every subsequent answer a reaction to you rather than a report on the customer's own life.
- 6Choose and Test Specific Segments1 min
Vague target markets like 'small business owners' produce vague, unusable data, so learning requires narrowing to a segment specific enough that its members share the same behavior and pain.
- 7Systematize Learning Instead of Trusting Memory1 min
Individual great conversations don't build a business; only a deliberate system for logging, reviewing, and acting on what you learn across many conversations does.
