What it's about
Robert Wright uses Charles Darwin's own life and letters to explain evolutionary psychology's account of human behavior: love, jealousy, friendship, status anxiety, guilt, and self-deception. He argues that natural selection built minds to maximize reproductive success, not truth or happiness, which means our moral feelings often function as tools of self-interest disguised as virtue. The book helped popularize evolutionary psychology and reopened debate about whether Darwinism undermines or can inform ethics.

What’s inside
- 1The New Darwinian Paradigm1 min
Wright argues that we cannot understand morality until we accept that the mind was built by natural selection to spread genes, not to find truth or produce happiness.
- 2Sex, Courtship, and Unequal Investment1 min
Male and female minds evolved distinct, often conflicting sexual strategies because women historically bore a much larger biological cost per offspring than men.
- 3Family Ties Are a Truce, Not a Given1 min
Family harmony is not automatic; it is a negotiated truce between relatives whose genetic interests overlap only partially, which explains why conflict inside families is normal rather than a breakdown.
- 4Friendship as Reciprocal Exchange1 min
Much of what we call friendship and kindness toward non-relatives is an evolved system of reciprocal exchange, policed by emotions like gratitude and moral outrage rather than by pure goodwill.
- 5Status and the Purpose of Self-Esteem1 min
Self-esteem functions less as an honest measure of worth than as an internal gauge that calibrates how much a person should compete for status, resources, and mates.
- 6The Modular Mind and Self-Deception1 min
The mind is not a single honest narrator but a set of semi-independent modules, and the part that talks to us and to others is often kept in the dark about the real motives driving our behavior.
- 7Morality as a Tool for Looking Good1 min
Moral emotions such as guilt, sympathy, and indignation evolved less to make people genuinely good than to make self-interested behavior look justified to others and to the self.
- 8Is Nature Moral? Confronting the Naturalistic Fallacy1 min
Wright insists that describing how morality evolved does not tell us what is actually right, and that treating evolved impulses as automatically good repeats the error of nineteenth-century Social Darwinism.
- 9Darwin's Own Moral Struggle1 min
Darwin's personal decency, including his kindness, his grief, and his generosity toward a rival, shows that people can act against the selfish defaults of their evolved psychology, not merely follow them.
- 10Toward a Biology-Informed Ethics1 min
Evolutionary self-knowledge, honestly applied, can expand the range of people we treat as morally equal by exposing in-group bias and self-serving reasoning as evolved defaults rather than neutral perception.
About Robert Wright
Robert Wright is an American journalist and author, not a biologist, who has written for The Atlantic, The New Republic, and Slate. He later wrote Nonzero and The Evolution of God. His method is synthesis: translating technical evolutionary biology and game theory into accessible argument for general readers.
