What it's about
Camus asks whether life is worth living once we admit it has no given meaning, and answers that it is—provided we refuse both suicide and false consolation. Written in occupied France in 1942, the essay names the gap between our hunger for meaning and a silent universe 'the absurd,' then works out what it would take to live inside that gap honestly. It became a founding text of postwar existentialist and absurdist thought, though Camus himself resisted the existentialist label.

Who it's for
- Readers facing a personal crisis of meaning who want a philosophical account rather than therapeutic comfort - Students of existentialism who want the source text behind terms like 'the absurd' and 'absurd hero' - Anyone drawn to Camus's fiction (The Stranger, The Plague) who wants the philosophical scaffolding beneath it
What’s inside
- 1The Only Serious Question1 min
Camus argues that whether life is worth living is the one philosophical question that precedes all others, because every other question assumes an answer to it.
- 2What the Absurd Actually Is1 min
Camus locates the absurd not in the world and not in the human mind alone, but in the friction between our demand for meaning and a universe that simply does not answer.
- 3The Leap: Philosophical Suicide1 min
Camus argues that most philosophers who confront the absurd honestly then betray it by making an unjustified leap to some consoling belief, an act he calls philosophical suicide.
- 4Living Without Appeal1 min
Camus claims that giving up hope for ultimate meaning does not lead to despair but to a paradoxical freedom, since a person who no longer expects justification from beyond this life is free to live fully within it.
- 5The Absurd Men: Quantity Over Quality1 min
Camus proposes that because no experience carries more ultimate value than any other in an absurd universe, the honest response is to seek the greatest quantity and intensity of experience rather than the deepest quality of any single one.
- 6Absurd Creation1 min
Camus argues that art produced with absurd honesty offers no explanations and preaches no answers, only multiplies descriptions of experience, making the artist rather than the philosopher the clearest model of how to live absurdly.
- 7Sisyphus at the Foot of the Mountain1 min
Camus concludes that Sisyphus becomes genuinely happy in the instant he becomes fully conscious of his endless, pointless task and refuses despair, and that this consciousness is the proper response to any absurd existence.
