The New Jim Crow
Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness

What it's about
Michelle Alexander argues that the American criminal justice system, especially the War on Drugs, functions as a new racial caste system that replaced Jim Crow segregation. Using felony convictions rather than explicit race laws, it strips millions of Black Americans of voting rights, employment, housing, and public benefits while remaining legally colorblind. The book mattered because it reframed mass incarceration as a civil rights crisis, not merely a crime policy failure, reshaping public debate and activism after its 2010 publication.

What’s inside
- 1The Rebirth of Caste1 min
Racial caste systems in America have not ended but have repeatedly reinvented themselves in new legal forms once the old ones become socially unacceptable.
- 2The Lockdown1 min
The legal architecture of the drug war, especially Supreme Court rulings on search, seizure, and prosecutorial discretion, made race-based policing effectively immune to constitutional challenge.
- 3The Color of Justice1 min
Black and White Americans use and sell drugs at roughly similar rates, yet the enforcement of drug law falls overwhelmingly on Black communities, which proves the system tracks race rather than crime.
- 4The Cruel Hand1 min
A felony conviction functions as a permanent legal status that reproduces the disenfranchisement of Jim Crow under a colorblind label, making release from prison not the end of punishment but the start of a new form of subjugation.
- 5The New Jim Crow1 min
Mass incarceration reproduces the specific social function of Jim Crow, defining a subordinate racial caste through legal status, even though it never mentions race and survives constitutional scrutiny that struck down explicit segregation.
- 6The Fire This Time1 min
Because mass incarceration relies on the passive complicity of people who do not think of themselves as racist, ending it requires a mass movement willing to name the system as racial injustice rather than a technocratic effort to reform individual laws.
