What it's about
Charles Duhigg argues that habits, not willpower, drive most human behavior, and that habits follow a predictable neurological loop of cue, routine, and reward that can be studied and deliberately rewired. Drawing on neuroscience, corporate case studies, and social movements, he shows why habits form, why they resist change, and how individuals, companies, and societies have transformed outcomes by targeting a single 'keystone habit' rather than trying to overhaul behavior wholesale.

What’s inside
- 1The Habit Loop1 min
Habits are not isolated behaviors but a three-part neurological loop of cue, routine, and reward that the brain runs largely on autopilot once learned.
- 2The Craving Brain1 min
Habits only become automatic once the brain starts anticipating the reward, and marketers can manufacture that craving deliberately.
- 3The Golden Rule of Habit Change1 min
The most reliable way to change a habit is not to eliminate it but to keep the same cue and reward while replacing only the routine in the middle.
- 4The Role of Belief1 min
Habit change becomes durable only when it is embedded in a larger belief system or community, not just a mechanical swap of routines.
- 5Keystone Habits1 min
Certain habits, called keystone habits, create a cascade of change across unrelated areas of life or organizations far beyond their immediate scope.
- 6Willpower as a Habit1 min
Willpower is not a fixed trait but functions like a muscle that can be strengthened through practiced routines, and this has direct payoffs for institutions that train it.
- 7Organizational Habits and Institutional Failure1 min
Companies run on institutional habits and unspoken truces between departments, and these routines can quietly enable disaster even in organizations full of competent people.
- 8How Target Predicts Habits1 min
Companies can identify and exploit the vulnerable transition points in customers' lives when old habits break down and new ones are up for grabs.
- 9Habits, Free Will, and Moral Responsibility1 min
Understanding the mechanics of habit does not excuse harmful behavior, because awareness of the loop restores a person's or society's responsibility to intervene.
