What it's about
Candice Millard reconstructs Theodore Roosevelt's 1913-1914 descent of an uncharted Amazon tributary, an expedition meant to be a scientific triumph that instead became a near-fatal ordeal of starvation, drowning, murder, and fever. The book argues that Roosevelt's restless need to prove his vitality after political defeat led him into a wilderness that nearly killed him and permanently damaged his health, reshaping how history remembers his final years.

What’s inside
- 1A President Undone1 min
Roosevelt's need to prove his physical and political vitality after losing the 1912 election pushed him toward a risk he would not have accepted at the height of his power.
- 2The Brazilian Colonel1 min
Cândido Rondon's decades spent stringing telegraph lines through unmapped Amazon territory made him the only man capable of leading the expedition, yet his military discipline and stoicism clashed with American assumptions about the trip.
- 3An Expedition Transformed1 min
Abandoning the mapped route for the River of Doubt turned a publicity tour into a gamble that outstripped the preparation either side had made.
- 4Into the Unknown1 min
The absence of any map meant that every bend and rapid carried a fatal unpredictability no prior experience could offset.
- 5The River Takes Its Toll1 min
The rapids destroyed canoes and morale faster than either could be replaced, stretching a trip planned for weeks into a nearly three-month ordeal.
- 6Murder in the Camp1 min
The killing of one camarada by another exposed how quickly starvation and fear can dissolve the order holding an expedition together, regardless of formal command.
- 7Roosevelt's Wound1 min
Roosevelt's infected leg and raging fever pushed him to ask privately to be left behind, showing that his legendary will to live yielded to his sense of duty toward the men who depended on him.
- 8Emergence and Reckoning1 min
Reaching a rubber-tapper settlement resolved the immediate crisis of survival but opened a longer argument over what the expedition had actually proven.
