What it's about
David Brooks argues that modern culture has tilted too far toward what he calls résumé virtues—achievement, status, and self-promotion—at the expense of eulogy virtues like humility, honesty, and depth of character. Drawing on biographical portraits of historical figures who wrestled with their own flaws, he makes the case that character is built through struggle, self-confrontation, and commitment to something larger than the self, not through following one's passions or maximizing self-esteem.

What’s inside
- 1Adam I and Adam II1 min
Brooks claims that everyone carries two competing selves—an ambitious, external achiever and a humble, internally oriented soul—and that modern life systematically starves the second in favor of the first.
- 2The Big Me and the Loss of Humility1 min
Brooks argues that a real historical shift occurred around the mid-twentieth century, in which American culture moved from a norm of self-effacement to a norm of self-promotion, and that this shift measurably eroded character formation.
- 3Self-Mastery Through Discipline: Eisenhower1 min
Brooks uses Dwight Eisenhower's biography to argue that the deliberate suppression of one's own temper and ambition, not their free expression, produced his capacity for effective leadership.
- 4Self-Conquest Through Submission: Dorothy Day1 min
Brooks argues, through Dorothy Day's conversion from a bohemian, self-directed youth to a disciplined religious life devoted to the poor, that character sometimes requires submitting to an external structure rather than following one's own desires.
- 5Ordered Ambition: Frances Perkins1 min
Brooks argues that Frances Perkins achieved major public accomplishment precisely by suppressing personal ambition and subordinating her identity to a cause, contradicting the idea that great achievement requires strong personal branding.
- 6The Discipline of Self-Examination: Montaigne1 min
Brooks argues, through Michel de Montaigne, that honest self-knowledge is not a private psychological exercise but a moral discipline that requires confronting one's own inconsistency and mediocrity without flattering excuse.
- 7Confronting Sin: Augustine1 min
Brooks argues, through Saint Augustine's Confessions, that character formation requires acknowledging a persistent capacity for self-centered wrongdoing rather than assuming that moral effort alone can produce goodness.
- 8Love, Suffering, and Vocation: George Eliot1 min
Brooks argues that George Eliot's early social exclusion and personal humiliation became the source of her later moral depth and capacity for empathetic art, rather than an obstacle she overcame despite itself.
- 9The Humility Code1 min
Brooks argues that the disparate lessons of these biographies can be distilled into a coherent, countercultural code centered on the claim that we are flawed creatures who become good only through struggle against our own nature, not through self-affirmation.
