The WEIRDest People in the World
How the West Became Psychologically Peculiar and Particularly Prosperous

What it's about
Henrich argues that people from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic societies are psychological outliers, not the human default that social science has assumed. He traces this peculiarity to a specific historical cause: the medieval Catholic Church's campaign against cousin marriage and clan structures, which dissolved Europe's kin networks and produced individualism, guilt, analytic thinking, and trust in strangers—traits that later fed markets, science, and democratic institutions.

What’s inside
- 1The WEIRD Outlier1 min
The psychological profile that scientists have treated as universal human nature is actually a rare configuration found mainly in modern Western societies.
- 2Measuring the Mind1 min
Basic cognitive style, not just stated values, differs across societies in ways that show culture shapes perception and reasoning, not merely opinion.
- 3Kin-Based Institutions1 min
Dense, intensive kinship networks—not modern institutions—have historically been humanity's main technology for organizing trust, loyalty, and cooperation.
- 4The Church's Marriage and Family Program1 min
The Catholic Church's medieval bans on cousin marriage, polygamy, and lineage-based inheritance were the specific historical mechanism that broke up Europe's clans.
- 5Moralizing Religion and Rituals of Cooperation1 min
Christian rituals and belief in a moralizing, all-seeing God extended trust and cooperative norms beyond kin, complementing the Church's assault on clan structures.
- 6Individuals Without Clans1 min
Once kin networks weakened, Europeans had to build self-regulation and trust on new foundations, producing the psychological package we now call WEIRD.
- 7Voluntary Associations and the Corporation1 min
Medieval guilds, monasteries, chartered towns, and universities gave ordinary Europeans practical training in self-governance and impartial rule-following that later institutions inherited.
- 8The Natural Experiment Across Europe1 min
Regional variation in how long and how thoroughly the Church's marriage rules were enforced provides a testable pattern linking kinship change to modern psychology, not just a plausible story.
- 9From Psychology to the Modern World1 min
WEIRD traits like impersonal trust, individualism, and analytic reasoning functioned as an enabling condition for markets, science, and industrial growth to take off first in parts of Europe.
