What it's about
Adam Grant argues that the ability to doubt what you know and revise your opinions is a distinct skill, separate from intelligence, and one that most people never practice. Drawing on organizational psychology, he shows how preachers, prosecutors, and politicians dominate everyday thinking while scientists, who treat beliefs as testable hypotheses, make better decisions. The book mattered because it reframed changing your mind as a strength rather than a weakness, at a moment of rising political and social polarization.

Start a circle and share the code — everyone sees everyone's honest place in the book. Accountability, not leaderboards.
Who it's for
- A manager whose team avoids disagreement and quietly makes worse decisions because of it - Someone who wants to change another person's mind on a charged topic without triggering a shutdown - A professional questioning a career or identity they built years ago and haven't revisited since
What’s inside
- 1Four Modes of Thought1 min
Most people default to defending, attacking, or campaigning for their existing views rather than genuinely testing them, and this default is what keeps bad ideas alive.
- 2Confident Humility1 min
The ideal mental stance is not confidence or humility alone but holding both at once: certainty in your ability to figure things out paired with doubt about what you currently believe.
- 3The Joy of Being Wrong1 min
Treating a changed mind as evidence of growth rather than failure requires detaching your identity from your opinions, which most people never learn to do.
- 4Productive Disagreement1 min
Disagreement about ideas improves decisions only when it stays separate from personal friction, and most teams fail to keep the two apart.
- 5Talking Someone Out of Certainty1 min
Direct persuasion attempts back people into a corner and increase resistance, while asking questions and listening does more to open a closed mind than any argument.
- 6Building a Challenge Network1 min
Surrounding yourself with people who make you feel good is comfortable, but surrounding yourself with people who make you think is what actually improves decisions.
- 7Crisis, Habit, and the Cost of Clinging1 min
Organizations and individuals that survive disruption are the ones that practice rethinking before a crisis forces it on them, not during the crisis itself.
- 8Rethinking Identity and Life Plans1 min
Because identities formed early in life calcify into unexamined scripts, deliberately revisiting career and life choices prevents decades of quiet misalignment.
