What it's about
Joe Simpson's memoir recounts his near-fatal 1985 climb of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes, where a shattered leg, a severed rope, and a four-day crawl back to camp forced him and his partner Simon Yates into impossible choices. The book argues that survival often depends less on strength than on a series of small, rational decisions made under unbearable pressure, and it reopened public debate about loyalty, sacrifice, and blame in extreme situations.

What’s inside
- 1The Line Up the Unclimbed Face1 min
The same appetite for risk that makes elite alpine climbing possible also manufactures the accidents that nearly kill its practitioners.
- 2The Fall1 min
A single moment of bad luck can undo days of careful climbing, which means survival stories that treat mastery as protection are telling only half the truth.
- 3The Improvised Rescue1 min
Yates's choice to attempt a lowering descent, rather than leave Simpson to die quickly, was itself a gamble that could have killed them both.
- 4The Rope Cut1 min
Cutting the rope was not a betrayal of partnership but the only rational act available once the shared bet had clearly failed.
- 5Alone in the Crevasse1 min
Simpson's survival depended on treating despair as a choice he could refuse, not a fact he had to accept.
- 6The Four-Day Crawl1 min
Breaking an impossible goal into arbitrary, tiny increments is what makes sustained effort under extreme pain and depletion actually possible.
- 7Return from the Dead1 min
Simpson's arrival at camp minutes before Yates would have left proves how much of survival, even with the right strategy, still comes down to timing outside anyone's control.
- 8The Judgment of Others1 min
Outside judgment of emergency decisions is nearly always less informed than it assumes, because it is made without the compressed time, incomplete information, and physical exhaustion that shaped the original choice.
