Who Moved My Cheese?
An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life

What it's about
Spencer Johnson uses a short parable about two mice and two miniature humans searching a maze for cheese to argue that most people's suffering during change comes not from the change itself but from clinging to outdated expectations. The book claims that anticipating, monitoring, and moving quickly toward new circumstances hurts less than denial and produces better outcomes. Marketed heavily to corporations during 1990s downsizing, it became a fixture of workplace training precisely because it reframes disruption as ordinary rather than unjust.

Who it's for
- Someone facing a layoff, relocation, or reorganization who needs a simple way to talk themselves into acting rather than waiting. - A manager who wants a shared vocabulary for telling a team that a comfortable arrangement is ending. - A reader skeptical of self-help who wants to understand why this particular fable became inescapable in offices for two decades.
What’s inside
- 1The Maze as a Model of Modern Life1 min
Johnson's underlying claim is that treating a job, a relationship, or an identity as a fixed possession rather than a temporary position in a maze guarantees unnecessary suffering when circumstances shift.
- 2Comfort at Station C Breeds Blindness1 min
The book argues that prolonged success is itself risky, because getting what you want for long enough erodes the very vigilance that helped you find it.
- 3When the Cheese Disappears, Character Shows1 min
Johnson claims that identical events produce wildly different outcomes depending on temperament, and that the response to loss matters more than the loss itself.
- 4Sniff and Scurry: Speed Without Deliberation1 min
The book holds up quick, low-reflection action as the ideal response to loss, treating hesitation itself as the primary danger rather than a possible safeguard.
- 5Hem's Denial: The Cost of Waiting for Things to Go Back to Normal1 min
The book argues that denial is not a neutral pause but an active loss, since every day spent expecting restoration is a day not spent searching for an alternative.
- 6Haw's Turning Point: Naming the Fear Before Acting1 min
The book's practical technique is that fear loses much of its grip once it is named and compared against an imagined life without it, rather than simply endured or ignored.
- 7The Wall Writings as Portable Wisdom1 min
The book claims that condensing a hard-won realization into a short written phrase, recorded while still uncertain of the outcome, is a legitimate way to change future behavior, not just a literary device.
- 8New Cheese at Station N: Adaptation Rewarded, Not Guaranteed1 min
The story's resolution treats finding new cheese as the natural payoff for persistence and courage, though this treats a fortunate outcome as if it were the reliable result of the right attitude.
- 9Monitoring for Change Prevents the Next Shock1 min
The book's closing argument is that the value of this whole experience is not the specific move Haw made but the habit of ongoing vigilance he builds afterward, and that habit, not any single decision, is what actually protects against future loss.
