What it's about
Robert Wright argues that core Buddhist claims about the mind—that human perception is systematically distorted, that the self is not a unified entity, and that suffering stems from craving—are validated by evolutionary psychology. Natural selection built minds to maximize reproductive success, not to see clearly, so our feelings routinely mislead us. Meditation, Wright argues, can loosen this grip and produce something like the clarity Buddhists call enlightenment, without requiring supernatural belief.

What’s inside
- 1The Design Flaw at the Core of Feeling1 min
Natural selection built human feelings to maximize reproduction and survival in ancestral environments, not to represent reality accurately, so trusting our feelings as guides to truth is a mistake.
- 2The Self Is Not a CEO1 min
There is no unified, centrally-controlling self directing behavior; the mind is a collection of modules competing for control, and the feeling of a single 'I' in charge is itself an evolved illusion.
- 3Meditation as a Tool for Interrupting Default Programming1 min
Mindfulness meditation works by training attention to notice feelings arising and passing without immediately acting on them, which weakens the automatic hold that evolved impulses have over behavior.
- 4Not-Self, Reconsidered as a Practical Discovery1 min
The Buddhist claim that the self is empty of a fixed essence is best understood not as a metaphysical proof but as an experiential discovery available to anyone who watches their own mind closely enough during meditation.
- 5Emptiness and the Stories We Project onto Things1 min
Objects, people, and even our own emotions feel like they have an inherent, essential nature, but this feeling of 'essence' is a mental projection that meditation can reveal as constructed rather than given.
- 6How Delusion Distorts Social Life and Tribalism1 min
The same mental machinery that distorts perception of objects also distorts perception of other people, generating tribal bias and moral self-flattery that meditation practice can partially expose and correct.
- 7Enlightenment Without Metaphysics1 min
Enlightenment can be understood as a real, gradable psychological achievement—seeing feelings and self clearly enough to be less driven by them—rather than a supernatural state requiring belief in rebirth or cosmic liberation.
