What it's about
Robert Caro's memoir of method explains how he researched and wrote The Power Broker and the ongoing Lyndon Johnson biography. It argues that understanding political power demands exhaustive archival digging, patient interviewing, and slow, deliberate prose, not theory or shortcuts. The book matters because it turns craft itself into an argument: that truth about how power actually works can only be earned through years of unglamorous labor most writers skip.

What’s inside
- 1Why Power, Not Character1 min
Political biography should expose the mechanics of power rather than psychological portraiture, because motive without mechanism explains nothing.
- 2Turn Every Page1 min
Exhaustive, near-total archival search is the only reliable defense against being fed a curated, self-serving version of events.
- 3Interviewing as Reconstruction1 min
Specific, sensory questions unlock buried memory far more reliably than direct questions about motive or opinion, which mostly produce rehearsed answers.
- 4Living Where the Story Happened1 min
Physical immersion in the geography and community of a subject's early life reveals formative pressures that documents and distant interviews cannot capture.
- 5A Research Partnership1 min
Caro's decades-long projects were only possible because his wife, Ina Caro, functioned as an equal, uncredited co-investigator, not a supporting spouse.
- 6Leaving Time Magazine1 min
A writer's usefulness depends on a personal, non-negotiable line against altering facts to fit a predetermined story, even at real career cost.
- 7Sentences Built for Momentum1 min
Deliberate, often laborious control of sentence rhythm, which Caro calls locomotion, is what makes exhaustively researched material readable rather than merely accurate.
- 8Where This Book Is Thin1 min
Working reads as a celebration of Caro's own method more than a rigorous account of its limits, and it underplays the risk that his interpretive framework about power shaped the evidence he selected.
