What it's about
McRaney argues that the mind is not a neutral recorder of reality but a machine built to protect a stable sense of self, often at the expense of accuracy. Drawing on decades of social psychology and cognitive science, he catalogs the everyday illusions - confirmation bias, self-justification, false memory, groupthink - that make people feel rational while acting otherwise. The book mattered because it translated academic findings into a popular, shareable vocabulary for self-doubt, building on a blog that reached millions before the manuscript existed.

Who it's for
- Someone who wants a plain-language map of the biases psychologists actually study, not a self-help gloss on them - A reader who enjoys being shown, with real experiments, how their own certainty can be wrong - Anyone building arguments, products, or policy who needs to understand why facts alone rarely change minds
What’s inside
- 1The Confirming Mind1 min
People do not weigh evidence evenly; they search for information that confirms what they already believe and discount what contradicts it.
- 2The Interpreter1 min
The mind routinely invents plausible explanations for its own behavior after the fact, and experiences those invented reasons as memories rather than guesses.
- 3Protecting the Story1 min
When a belief collides with contrary evidence or with one's own behavior, people typically revise the belief about reality rather than the behavior or the belief that caused it.
- 4When Correction Backfires1 min
Presenting someone with clear factual evidence that a belief is false can make them believe it more strongly, not less.
- 5Confident and Wrong1 min
The same lack of skill or knowledge that causes someone to perform poorly also prevents them from recognizing that their performance is poor.
- 6The Taste of a Brand1 min
Preference for a product frequently comes from the identity attached to its brand rather than from the product's physical qualities, and the brand can change how the qualities are perceived, not just how they are judged.
- 7The Pull of the Group1 min
People will knowingly state an answer they believe to be wrong rather than contradict a unanimous group, even when the correct answer is visually obvious.
- 8Nobody Moves1 min
The presence of more witnesses to an emergency lowers, rather than raises, the odds that any single person present will act.
- 9The Present Self Writes Checks1 min
Procrastination is not primarily a failure of time management but a bias toward immediate reward that causes people to consistently undervalue their own future well-being.
- 10Finding Faces in Noise1 min
The mind is built to detect meaningful patterns even in random data, which produces superstition and false correlation as a byproduct of otherwise useful perception.
