Joshua 1:4

From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.

Honour is here put upon Joshua, and great power lodged in his hand, by him that is the fountain of honour and power, and by whom kings reign. Instructions are given him by Infinite Wisdom, and encouragements by the God of all consolation. God had before spoken to Moses concerning him (Num 27:18), but now he speaks to him (v. 1), probably as he spoke to Moses (Lev 1:1) out of the tabernacle of the congregation, where Joshua had with Moses presented himself (Deu 31:14), to learn the way of attending there. Though Eleazar had the breast-plate of judgment, which Joshua was directed to consult as there was occasion (Num 27:21), yet, for his greater encouragement, God here speaks to him immediatel…

all the land of the Hittites--These occupied the southern extremities and were the dominant tribe of Canaan. Their superior power and the extent of their dominions are attested by the mention of them under the name of Khita, on the Assyrian inscriptions, and still more frequently on the Egyptian inscriptions of the eighteenth and nineteenth Dynasties. What life and encouragement must have been imparted to Joshua by the assurance that his people, who had been overwhelmed with fear of that gigantic race, were to possess "all the land of the Hittites"!

From the wilderness and this Lebanon - Joshua appears to be standing with his face towards the promised land, and pointing out the different places, or their situation, with his hand, This Lebanon, etc. The utmost of their limits should be from the desert of Arabia Petraea on the South to Lebanon on the North: and from the Euphrates on the East to the Mediterranean Sea on the West. The Israelites did not possess the full extent of this grant till the days of David. See Sa2 8:3, etc., and Ch2 9:26. "Just as," he says, "I said to Moses, this wilderness and Antilibanus, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates." God placed the "wilderness" under Jesus, that is, the desert places. What desert places? Of which the prophet says: "rejoice, O thirsting wilderness," and: "many are the children of the desolate one, more than of her who has a husband." And again he did not say Lebanon, but "Antilibanus," which Jesus received from God. Now "Antilibanus" is so called as it were in place of Lebanon. If therefore you see that former people according to the flesh, Israel, who was "the true olive," understand that this itself was the true Lebanon; but when you see that on account of its unbelief "the kingdom is taken away from it and given to a nation producing its fruit," perceive that this people, which is brought into the kingdom in place of that expelled one, is the "Antilibanus," which is "the church of the living God" gathered from the nations through Jesus Christ our Lord, "to whom is glory and dominion unto ages of ages. Amen!"
