What it's about
Bryson recounts his attempt, at middle age and wildly out of shape, to hike the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail with an equally unprepared old friend. The book argues that America has let its wilderness become an afterthought, mismanaged by underfunded agencies and crowded out by development, while also making the case that direct, humbling contact with nature and long walking are still available to ordinary unfit people willing to suffer for them.

Who it's for
- Armchair travelers who want adventure without leaving a chair - Middle-aged readers considering a physical challenge past their prime - Anyone curious about how America's public lands are actually managed
What’s inside
- 1An Unlikely Plan1 min
A person can decide to attempt something physically absurd, like a 2,100-mile hike with no training, simply because the alternative of not trying feels worse than the risk of failing.
- 2Katz Joins the Walk1 min
The right hiking partner matters less for skill than for shared vulnerability, since a companion who is equally unprepared turns hardship into comedy rather than despair.
- 3The Body Revolts1 min
Long-distance hiking punishes the body in ways that fitness culture and gear marketing rarely admit, and the discomfort itself is the primary experience, not a side effect of it.
- 4Who Built This Trail1 min
The Appalachian Trail exists because of one visionary's idealistic plan for regional renewal, not simply as a scenic path, and that original purpose has been mostly forgotten.
- 5A Vanishing Forest1 min
America's eastern forests look wild but are ecologically diminished and increasingly fragile, a fact largely invisible to casual hikers who assume old growth still surrounds them.
- 6Bears, Fear, and Reality1 min
The dangers hikers fear most, like bear attacks, are wildly overstated compared to mundane risks like weather and falls, revealing how imagination distorts risk assessment in the wild.
- 7Trail Towns and Ordinary America1 min
The small towns bordering the Appalachian Trail reveal an America of economic strain and quiet hospitality that thru-hikers pass through but rarely see fully.
- 8Giving Up the Full Trail1 min
Completing a goal exactly as originally planned matters less than the honest experience gained from attempting it, even if the attempt falls well short of the original target.
- 9Parks Without Enough Protection1 min
National parks and the agencies managing them are chronically underfunded and organizationally fragmented, which quietly undermines the protection the public assumes these lands receive.
- 10What the Woods Give Back1 min
Sustained exposure to difficulty and nature changes a person's perspective in modest, lasting ways rather than producing the dramatic transformation adventure narratives usually promise.
About Bill Bryson
Bill Bryson is an American-British writer known for travel and popular science books including 'Notes from a Small Island' and 'A Short History of Nearly Everything.' A journalist by training, he brings a curious outsider's eye to both the trail's ecology and its bureaucratic history, drawing on interviews, research, and his own failed attempt at a full thru-hike.
