Braiding Sweetgrass
Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants

What it's about
Kimmerer, a botanist and Potawatomi citizen, argues that ecological crisis is partly a crisis of relationship: Western science treats nature as object and resource, while Indigenous traditions treat it as kin owed gratitude and reciprocity. Through essays on sweetgrass, strawberries, pecans, and polluted land, she argues these two ways of knowing can be braided together into a more complete and more sustainable practice. The book became an unlikely bestseller and reshaped popular environmental writing.

Who it's for
- Gardeners and naturalists who want a scientific eye paired with a sense of wonder - Readers drawn to Indigenous knowledge who want it presented by a practicing scientist, not a tourist - Anyone questioning consumer culture who wants an alternative built from stories rather than slogans
What’s inside
- 1Skywoman Falling1 min
Kimmerer argues that a culture's origin story functions as an operating ethical code, and the Skywoman story of gift and gratitude produces a fundamentally different relationship to land than a story of expulsion and dominion.
- 2Learning the Grammar of Animacy1 min
The grammar of a language shapes ecological perception, so that Potawatomi's verb-based animacy toward bays, hills, and berries produces kinship where English's noun-based grammar produces property.
- 3The Gift of Strawberries1 min
Treating the natural world as a gift rather than a commodity changes human behavior toward it, because gifts, unlike purchases, create ongoing relationships of gratitude and obligation.
- 4The Council of Pecans1 min
The synchronized mast-fruiting of pecan trees shows that cooperation, not only competition, is a viable and observable survival strategy in nature, challenging purely individualist readings of evolution.
- 5The Honorable Harvest and the Three Sisters1 min
Sustainable use of natural resources requires an explicit, teachable code of restraint rather than general reverence, and companion planting like the Three Sisters shows such codes can be agronomically superior to monoculture.
- 6Windigo Footprints1 min
The Windigo myth of the insatiable cannibal monster names unlimited consumer growth as a recognized pathology rather than a natural or inevitable economic default.
- 7Braiding Two Ways of Knowing1 min
Indigenous traditional knowledge and Western empirical science are not rivals but complementary strands that, braided together, produce better ecological understanding than either alone.
- 8Becoming Indigenous to a Place1 min
Anyone, regardless of ancestry, can become indigenous to a place through the sustained reciprocal labor of restoring damaged land, meaning belonging is earned through care rather than granted only by birth.
- 9Returning the Gift1 min
Gratitude, practiced consistently rather than felt occasionally, becomes the seed of a different political economy built on reciprocity instead of extraction.
