What it's about
Console Wars reconstructs the early-1990s fight between Sega and Nintendo for control of the American video game market, centered on Tom Kalinske, the outsider CEO who turned Sega from a distant runner-up into a genuine threat to Nintendo's near-monopoly. The book argues that marketing audacity, pricing, and content deals can topple an entrenched incumbent, but that internal division between a company's regional arms can just as quickly undo the gains. It mattered because it set the template, and the cautionary tale, for platform competition in tech.

What’s inside
- 1An Empire Assumes Its Own Permanence1 min
Dominance built on rigid, top-down control invites disruption once a rival empowers local leadership to break the incumbent's rules.
- 2Giving Away the Crown Jewel1 min
Sacrificing margin on a flagship product to win platform adoption can beat protecting profit on each unit sold.

- 4Winning the War Through Third-Party Content1 min
Platform wars are decided as much by exclusive software relationships as by hardware specifications.
- 5The Content Arms Race and Its Political Cost1 min
Escalating shock content to differentiate a brand can outrun public tolerance and invite regulation that reshapes an entire industry.
- 6Success Invites Recentralization1 min
A subsidiary's earned autonomy lasts only as long as the parent company chooses to tolerate it, and success tends to attract renewed control.
- 7Fragmenting the Platform to Defend It1 min
Rushing expensive add-ons to market in order to defend a lead can dilute the core product and erode the trust that built the lead in the first place.
- 8The Saturn Launch That Broke Retailer Trust1 min
Winning a short-term surprise in the press can permanently damage the retail relationships a long-term strategy depends on.
- 9Patience as a Competitive Strategy1 min
A company that stays disciplined and lets a rival's short-term aggression exhaust itself can recover ground it previously lost.
- 10The War's Real Decisive Factor1 min
The console war was decided less by marketing genius or engineering than by which company's leadership stayed unified enough to execute its own strategy under pressure.
