Xerox PARC and the Dawn of the Computer Age

What it's about
Hiltzik reconstructs how Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center, founded in 1970, assembled the researchers who invented the personal computer, the graphical interface, Ethernet, and laser printing, then shows how Xerox's corporate leadership failed to capitalize on any of it. The book argues that breakthrough innovation and the ability to commercialize it are separate skills, and that a company can possess genius and still lose the future it built.

Start a circle and share the code — everyone sees everyone's honest place in the book. Accountability, not leaderboards.
Who it's for
- Technology professionals who want the real prehistory behind the interfaces and networks they use daily - Business leaders curious how a company can invent the future and still fail to profit from it - Readers of Silicon Valley history who want the PARC story told with primary sources rather than legend
What’s inside
- 1A Blank Check in Palo Alto1 min
PARC's early breakthroughs were possible only because Xerox, flush with copier profits, gave researchers money and freedom with almost no oversight, a condition few companies can or will replicate.
- 2The Alto and the Graphical Idea1 min
The graphical user interface was not a single invention but the fusion of separate research threads, and its coherence came from Alan Kay's insistence on designing for how people actually think.
- 3Wiring the Machines Together1 min
Ethernet's invention shows that PARC's genius extended beyond single machines to the infrastructure connecting them, because a personal computer without a network was, in Metcalfe's view, nearly useless.
- 4A Culture That Would Not Ship1 min
PARC's failure to commercialize its inventions was not simple corporate stupidity but a structural mismatch between a research culture built on academic freedom and a corporation built on copier sales cycles.
- 5The Visit That Changed Silicon Valley1 min
Steve Jobs's 1979 visit to PARC mattered less because Xerox was careless with secrets and more because Xerox had no internal champion willing to fight as hard for the ideas as Jobs would.
- 6Talent Drains Toward Conviction1 min
PARC's inventions ultimately built other companies' fortunes because talented researchers followed the people who would fight to ship their work, not the company that funded the research.
- 7What Xerox Actually Gained1 min
Xerox's failure was not absolute since it did profit substantially from laser printing, showing the common claim that Xerox 'got nothing' from PARC oversimplifies a more mixed outcome.
About Michael A. Hiltzik
Michael A. Hiltzik is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who spent years at the Los Angeles Times covering business and technology. He interviewed dozens of PARC's original scientists and engineers and drew on internal Xerox documents to write this history, giving the book unusual access to the people who built the machines.
