The Age of Surveillance Capitalism
The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power

What it's about
Zuboff argues that Google, Facebook, and their imitators created a fundamentally new economic logic: extracting behavioral data from human experience without consent, using it to predict and modify behavior, and selling those predictions to advertisers and others. She calls this surveillance capitalism and treats it as a rupture from market capitalism as serious as industrial capitalism's rupture from feudalism. The book matters because it names a business model most people use daily but cannot see.

Who it's for
- Readers who use Google, Facebook, or Amazon daily and want to understand what happens to their data behind the interface - Policy makers, lawyers, and regulators trying to build a legal framework for a business model that predates the laws meant to govern it - Business students and technologists who want the economic history of how targeted advertising became a trillion-dollar industry
What’s inside
- 1A New Species of Capitalism1 min
Surveillance capitalism is not an extension of advertising or market capitalism but a distinct economic logic built on the unilateral claim to human experience as free raw material.
- 2Behavioral Surplus1 min
The profit in surveillance capitalism comes not from the data needed to improve a service but from the surplus data collected beyond that need and sold to third parties.
- 3Prediction Markets and the New Priesthood1 min
Surveillance capitalists sell not advertising but the ability to predict and eventually guarantee human behavior, creating markets in futures that resemble financial derivatives more than commercials.
- 4From Prediction to Behavior Modification1 min
Because guaranteed outcomes are more profitable than probable ones, surveillance capitalism creates economic pressure to actively modify human behavior rather than merely forecast it.
- 5Instrumentarian Power1 min
Surveillance capitalism introduces a form of power distinct from totalitarianism, one that seeks not to control belief but to render human behavior predictable and modifiable through constant instrumentation.
- 6The Elimination of the Right to the Future Tense1 min
By rendering human futures predictable and salable, surveillance capitalism erodes individual autonomy, which Zuboff defines as the right to decide one's own future rather than have it decided by others' predictions.
- 7Complicity and the Illusion of Consent1 min
Formal consent mechanisms like terms of service agreements function to legitimize extraction rather than to give users meaningful control over their data.
- 8Two Modernities and the Case for Collective Response1 min
Because surveillance capitalism's harms are collective and systemic, they cannot be solved by individual privacy choices and require new law and collective political action instead.
