What it's about
Newport argues that compulsive use of smartphones and social media is not a personal failing but the predictable result of attention-engineering by tech companies, and that the fix is not moderation but a deliberate philosophy: use technology only in ways that directly serve values you've chosen, and reject the rest outright. The book mattered because it arrived in 2019 amid growing unease about screen time, offering a structured, non-Luddite alternative to both digital addiction and total tech rejection.

Who it's for
- Knowledge workers who reach for their phone dozens of times a day without deciding to - Parents worried about their own or their children's relationship with social media - Anyone who has tried a 'digital detox' before and slid back into old habits within weeks
What’s inside
- 1The Attention Economy Isn't an Accident1 min
Compulsive phone checking is engineered behavior, not a character flaw, because tech companies profit directly from maximizing time-on-app.
- 2Solitude Deprivation1 min
Constant connectivity has eliminated a basic human need for unstructured solitude, and this loss—not just distraction—is driving rising anxiety.
- 3The Digital Declutter1 min
A one-time thirty-day break from optional technologies works better than gradual cutting back, because it lets you rebuild your life from scratch before deciding what to let back in.
- 4Solitude as a Practice, Not an Accident1 min
Solitude has to be deliberately scheduled and protected, because left to default behavior, any spare moment will be filled with a phone.
- 5Conversation and the Cost of Connection Without Presence1 min
Texting and social media create a weaker substitute for conversation that can crowd out the deeper, more demanding kind of connection humans actually need.
- 6Reclaiming Leisure1 min
Passive, screen-based leisure fails to satisfy because humans need active, skill-based, often social leisure to feel genuinely restored.
- 7Joining the Attention Resistance1 min
Individual habit changes aren't enough on their own; treating your attention as something worth actively defending requires ongoing structural choices, not one-time willpower.
