What it's about
Daniel Pink argues that the carrot-and-stick model of motivation, built on rewarding and punishing behavior, works for simple mechanical tasks but actively undermines performance on work that requires judgment, creativity, or problem-solving. Drawing on decades of behavioral science, he proposes that autonomy, mastery, and purpose drive better results in a knowledge economy, and that most organizations are still managing people as if the assembly line never ended.

What’s inside
- 1The Operating System Is Outdated1 min
The reward-and-punishment model that built the industrial economy actively damages performance on the complex, creative work that now dominates it.
- 2Why Carrots and Sticks Backfire1 min
Contingent if-then rewards reliably produce seven specific failure modes rather than uniformly boosting effort.
- 3Type I and Type X Behavior1 min
People can be sorted by which motivational fuel dominates their behavior, and this sorting predicts long-run satisfaction better than talent or income.
- 4Autonomy: Control Over Task, Time, Technique, and Team1 min
Genuine motivation requires control over four specific dimensions of work, not just flexible hours or open floor plans.
- 5Mastery: The Pull of Getting Better1 min
Sustained effort toward improvement, not achievement of a fixed goal, is what makes difficult work feel worthwhile.
- 6Purpose: The Motive Beyond the Self1 min
People and organizations that orient toward a cause larger than profit sustain effort and attract commitment that pure profit-seeking cannot match.
- 7Redesigning Work Around the Three Drives1 min
The autonomy-mastery-purpose model requires concrete redesign of pay, feedback, and goal-setting, not just cultural rhetoric about values.
