What it's about
Hans Rosling argues that most people, including experts, hold a systematically distorted view of global trends, believing the world is poorer, sicker, and more chaotic than it is. Drawing on decades of teaching and a worldwide quiz he administered to students, journalists, and executives, he identifies ten deep-seated mental habits that warp perception of data. The book matters because it reframes 'developing vs. developed' thinking and shows, with evidence, that extreme poverty, child mortality, and illiteracy have fallen dramatically.

What’s inside
- 1The Four Levels, Not Two Worlds1 min
The habit of sorting countries into 'developing' and 'developed' hides the fact that most of humanity now lives in the broad middle, making the binary itself the biggest source of confusion about the world.
- 2The Gap Instinct1 min
The instinct to see the world as split into two opposing groups makes people miss that most measures of human life form a continuous spread, not a divide.
- 3The Negativity Instinct1 min
People notice bad news more readily than good news, and mistake a world that is still bad in absolute terms for a world that is getting worse, when many long-run trends are improving.
- 4The Straight Line Instinct1 min
Assuming that a rising trend, especially population growth, will continue in a straight line ignores the well-documented pattern of curves bending as development proceeds.
- 5The Fear Instinct1 min
Media and evolutionary wiring make people overestimate the danger of dramatic, rare risks while underestimating common, undramatic ones, distorting judgments about how dangerous the world really is.
- 6The Size Instinct1 min
A number reported in isolation, without a rate, ratio, or comparison, tends to look far more dramatic and meaningful than it actually is.
- 7The Generalization Instinct1 min
Grouping countries, cultures, or income levels into a single category and assuming uniformity within it produces confident but false pictures of how people actually live.
- 8The Destiny Instinct1 min
The belief that a country, religion, or culture is fixed by innate traits ignores how quickly social and economic conditions actually change, often within a single generation.
- 9The Single Perspective Instinct1 min
Relying on one favored framework, whether free markets, government intervention, or any single ideology, to explain every problem leads to blind spots that a mix of tools and evidence-based skepticism can avoid.
- 10The Blame Instinct1 min
The urge to find a single guilty individual or group for a bad outcome distracts from the more accurate, more useful, and usually more complex explanation involving systems and incentives.
- 11The Urgency Instinct1 min
The feeling that a decision must be made immediately, right now, degrades judgment and leads to actions based on incomplete information that a few more hours of analysis would have improved.
