What it's about
Nick Bilton reconstructs the founding of Twitter through the rivalries of Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass, arguing that the company's official founding myth obscures a messier truth: erased contributors, boardroom coups, and personal betrayals. The book matters because it shows how a product built on connecting people nearly destroyed the friendships of the people who built it, and how corporate mythology gets written by whoever survives to tell it.

Who it's for
- Tech workers curious about what really happens inside a startup once venture money and egos enter the room - Business readers interested in how boards remove and reinstall founder-CEOs - General readers who use Twitter and want the human story behind the brand
What’s inside
- 1The Odeo Pivot1 min
Twitter emerged not from deliberate vision but from a failing podcasting company's desperate scramble to find a new idea, showing that breakthrough products often come from the wreckage of failed ones.
- 2Noah Glass Disappears1 min
The person most responsible for nurturing an idea into a working product can be written out of a company's official history once the people left standing control the story.
- 3Dorsey's First Reign1 min
Dorsey's early product instincts made him the right person to imagine Twitter, but his controlling, detail-obsessed management style made him poorly suited to run the company that resulted.
- 4The 2008 Boardroom Coup1 min
Boards will remove even a founding, symbolically essential CEO once operational failure threatens growth, regardless of what the founder believes he is owed.
- 5Williams's Cautious Command1 min
Evan Williams's careful, consensus-seeking leadership style, well suited to incubating an early-stage idea, became a liability once Twitter needed fast, decisive execution at scale.
- 6Biz Stone, the Diplomat1 min
Interpersonal diplomacy, embodied by Biz Stone's efforts to keep warring cofounders speaking to each other, was as essential to Twitter's survival as any strategic or product decision.
- 7Dorsey's Long Campaign Back1 min
Dorsey regained power at Twitter not primarily through operational results but through a sustained, deliberate campaign to control the company's public story and cultivate board allies.
- 8Costolo's Operational Turn1 min
Twitter's growth into a durable business required a non-founder executive whose skills were organizational and commercial rather than visionary, showing that the person who imagines a product is rarely the person equipped to run it at scale.
