What it's about
Amy Goldstein spent six years following residents of Janesville, Wisconsin, after General Motors closed its century-old assembly plant in December 2008. She argues that the promised remedies for deindustrialization—retraining, local boosterism, bipartisan optimism—did not deliver what they promised, and that the human cost of a plant closing runs deeper and lasts longer than politicians or economists usually admit. The book mattered because it turned an abstract statistic into a lived, documented account of downward mobility in the American heartland.

Who it's for
- Readers who want to understand what happened to manufacturing towns after 2008, not in aggregate but in names and faces - Policymakers and economists who assume job retraining is a reliable fix for mass layoffs - Anyone trying to understand the economic anxiety behind Rust Belt politics in the 2010s
What’s inside
- 1The Plant That Built the Town1 min
A single employer can define a community's identity so completely that its closure amounts to a kind of civic amputation, not just an economic loss.
- 2The Janesville Way1 min
Communities often respond to economic trauma with a narrative of collective resilience that can obscure how unevenly the pain is actually distributed.
- 3The GM Gypsies1 min
Keeping a paycheck by transferring to a distant GM plant traded one kind of hardship for another, splitting families rather than saving them.
- 4The Retraining Promise1 min
Job retraining, the policy most often prescribed for displaced manufacturing workers, frequently left them worse off financially than before.
- 5Rock County 5.0 and the Limits of Boosterism1 min
Local economic development efforts led by business elites tended to prioritize attracting new employers over directly aiding displaced workers.
- 6What Happens to a Marriage1 min
Sustained unemployment and underemployment corrode marriages through financial stress and shifting roles, not sudden dramatic events but slow erosion.
- 7The Children Who Absorbed the Shock1 min
Economic collapse in a town is transmitted most cruelly to children, through hunger, instability, and disrupted schooling, even when adults try to shield them.
- 8Women Adapted, Men Struggled1 min
The recovery was gendered: women more often found a path into new, lower-paid but stable work, while men clung longer to the identity and wages of manufacturing.
- 9Paul Ryan's Hometown and the Politics of Recovery1 min
National political rhetoric about economic recovery, delivered by figures like Paul Ryan, often ran well ahead of what Janesville's data and daily life actually showed.
- 10A Different, Harder Town1 min
By the mid-2010s Janesville had more jobs but a fundamentally poorer, more unequal economy than before the plant closed, and calling this a recovery understates what was lost.
