Selfish Reasons to Have More Kids
Why Being a Great Parent Is Less Work and More Fun Than You Think

What it's about
Economist Bryan Caplan argues that modern parents work far too hard raising children, based on a misreading of the evidence about how much parenting actually shapes who kids become as adults. Drawing on twin and adoption studies, he contends parental effort matters less than believed, so parents can relax, enjoy parenthood more, and rationally choose to have more children — a choice he claims is good for parents personally and good for humanity as a whole.

Who it's for
- Parents anxious about doing parenting 'right' who want permission to relax. - People weighing whether to have another child and unsure if it is worth the cost. - Readers curious how behavioral genetics and economics can reshape everyday family decisions.
What’s inside
- 1What Twins and Adoptees Reveal1 min
Parenting practices matter far less for how children turn out as adults than parents assume, because twin and adoption research shows shared family environment explains only a small share of adult outcomes.
- 2Not All Outcomes Are Equally Fixed1 min
Parents can still shape some things about their children durably — like religious practice, language, and the parent-child relationship itself — even though they can't reliably engineer adult personality, intelligence, or income.
- 3The Case for Relaxing1 min
Because parenting has little lasting effect on the adult a child becomes, parents can substitute calmer, less exhausting 'good enough' parenting for anxious overinvestment without damaging their children's futures.
- 4Parents Undervalue the Payoff1 min
Parents chronically underestimate how good parenthood is because they weigh the exhausting daily grind of early childhood too heavily against the much longer, more rewarding decades of relationship that follow.
- 5The Inflated Price of a Child1 min
Fertility has fallen not because people want fewer children but because modern intensive-parenting norms have artificially inflated the perceived cost of each additional child.
- 6Quantity Without Sacrificing Quality1 min
The classic economic warning that more children means lower quality per child weakens considerably once you accept that parental investment has a much smaller causal effect on adult outcomes than economic models traditionally assumed.
- 7Children as a Long-Term Investment1 min
Because a child is a decades-long relationship rather than a short-term project, having more children is a good personal investment, since each one compounds into more love, support, and eventually grandchildren.
- 8Why More People Is Good for Everyone1 min
A larger population benefits humanity as a whole, since more people generate proportionally more ideas and innovation than they consume in resources, making the selfish case for more children align with a broader social case.
- 9Answering the Objections1 min
The standard objections to having more children — expense, environmental harm, and burden on parents — are substantially overstated once separated from the false assumption that intensive parenting is required.
