The Anxious Generation
How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness

What it's about
Jonathan Haidt argues that the sudden, synchronized rise in teen depression, anxiety, and self-harm that began around 2012 was caused by two linked trends: the near-total replacement of unsupervised, physical childhood play with smartphone- and social-media-centered life, and a parallel collapse of childhood independence in the real world. He calls this shift the Great Rewiring and treats it as a public health emergency requiring collective, not just individual, action.

Who it's for
- A parent deciding when to hand a child a smartphone or allow social media accounts - A teacher or school administrator weighing a phone-free classroom policy - A policymaker or tech-industry professional working on youth safety and platform design
What’s inside
- 1The Great Rewiring1 min
A single historical hinge point, roughly 2010 to 2015, marks the moment childhood shifted from being organized around free play to being organized around smartphones, and this shift is large enough to explain a generational change in mental health.
- 2The Data Behind the Crisis1 min
National mental health statistics show a sudden, sharp, and internationally consistent break around 2012, not a slow drift, which suggests a specific triggering cause rather than gradual social change.
- 3Making the Case for Causation1 min
Multiple independent lines of evidence, including natural experiments, dose-response patterns, and experimental studies, together justify treating smartphones and social media as a primary cause of the mental health decline rather than a coincidental correlation.
- 4The Disappearance of Play-Based Childhood1 min
Decades of increasing adult supervision and safety-focused parenting deprived children of the unsupervised risk-taking and free play essential to building competence and emotional resilience, well before smartphones arrived.
- 5Underprotection in the Virtual World1 min
While parents were overprotecting children physically, tech companies were left almost entirely unregulated in building products for children's attention, creating a mismatch where real-world risk was minimized and virtual-world risk was maximized.
- 6Four Foundational Harms1 min
Phone-based childhood damages development through four distinct mechanisms, social deprivation, sleep deprivation, attention fragmentation, and addiction, each independently sufficient to impair adolescent wellbeing.
- 7Different Wounds for Girls and Boys1 min
Social media harms girls and boys through different pathways, visual social comparison and relational aggression for girls, and withdrawal into gaming, pornography, and disengagement for boys, so a single remedy will not fit both.
- 8The Loss of Awe and Sacredness1 min
A phone-based childhood crowds out experiences of awe, transcendence, and sustained real-world attention that historically anchored adolescent identity and meaning, leaving a spiritual as well as psychological deficit.
- 9Four Norms for Reform1 min
Because collective incentives, not individual willpower, drive phone-based childhood, meaningful change requires coordinated norm shifts, no smartphones before high school, no social media before 16, phone-free schools, and far more unsupervised childhood independence, rather than individual family rules alone.
- 10Who Has to Act, and How1 min
Because tech companies profit from the status quo and individual families cannot solve a coordination problem alone, durable change requires action from schools, lawmakers, and platform designers, not just parents.
