What it's about
Quammen investigates zoonotic diseases—infections that jump from animals to humans—tracing outbreaks of Ebola, Hendra, Nipah, SARS, HIV, and others to their origins in bats, primates, and other wildlife reservoirs. He argues that as humans disrupt ecosystems, deforest habitats, and encroach on wildlife, we increase the frequency of these spillover events, making a severe pandemic not a matter of if but when. Written in 2012, the book reads as an eerie prediction of COVID-19 and reframes pandemics as ecological, not just medical, phenomena.

Who it's for
- Readers curious about the ecological roots of pandemics rather than just their medical treatment - Public health students and professionals who want narrative context for zoonotic disease theory - Anyone who read about COVID-19's origins and wants the deeper scientific and historical background
What’s inside
- 1The Logic of Spillover1 min
Most emerging human diseases are not new pathogens but old animal pathogens finding a new host because human behavior creates the opportunity.
- 2Hendra and the Bat Reservoir Problem1 min
Bats are disproportionately important as viral reservoirs because their unique physiology and social behavior let them harbor lethal viruses without symptoms.
- 3Ebola and the Terror of High Lethality1 min
The deadliest-looking diseases are not necessarily the most dangerous to humanity, because extreme lethality can limit a pathogen's spread.
- 4SARS and the Wet Market Pathway1 min
Live animal markets create dense, artificial mixing zones between species that would rarely meet in nature, manufacturing spillover opportunities.
- 5Malaria, Q Fever, and the Diversity of Spillover Pathways1 min
Spillover is not a single mechanism but a family of related processes, and understanding disease emergence requires cataloguing multiple pathways rather than one model.
- 6HIV as the Paradigmatic Slow Spillover1 min
HIV demonstrates that the most dangerous pandemic pathogens may be the ones that spread quietly for decades before being recognized, not the ones that cause immediate dramatic outbreaks.
- 7The Next Big One1 min
A future severe pandemic is best understood as a probabilistic near-certainty driven by combinable risk factors, not a single predictable pathogen we can name in advance.
About David Quammen
David Quammen is an American science journalist and longtime contributing writer for National Geographic. He has spent decades reporting on evolutionary biology, ecology, and infectious disease, often embedding with field scientists in remote locations. His other books include The Song of the Dodo and The Tangled Tree. Spillover drew on years of firsthand travel to outbreak sites and interviews with virologists and disease ecologists.
