What it's about
Drucker argues that effectiveness is not a talent but a discipline, a set of practices any knowledge worker can learn. Unlike manual work, where efficiency is measured by output volume, knowledge work is measured by getting the right results, and this requires deliberate habits of mind. Written in 1966 for the emerging class of managers whose contribution could not be measured on an assembly line, the book mattered because it reframed executive success as a method rather than a personality trait.

What’s inside
- 1Effectiveness Can Be Learned1 min
Effectiveness is a set of learnable habits rather than an innate trait, so any executive who fails at it has simply not practiced the right routines.
- 2Know Where Your Time Actually Goes1 min
Executives cannot manage their priorities until they first measure, not estimate, how their time is actually spent.
- 3Ask What You Can Contribute, Not What You Are Owed1 min
Effective executives orient their work around outward contribution to the organization's results rather than around effort, activity, or their own job description.
- 4Make Strengths Productive1 min
Organizations should be staffed and structured around what people can do well, because managing around weaknesses wastes the scarcest resource an organization has, which is competent people.
- 5Do First Things First1 min
Effectiveness requires deliberately concentrating on one major priority at a time and postponing or abandoning everything else, rather than trying to balance many priorities at once.
- 6The Elements of Effective Decision-Making1 min
Good decisions come from a structured process of defining the problem generically and generating disagreement, not from gathering consensus or reacting to isolated facts.
- 7Effective Decisions Require Converting Judgment Into Action1 min
A decision only becomes real when it is built into someone's job, with clear accountability and a way to test whether it is working, otherwise it remains a private opinion.
