The Explosive Child
A New Approach for Understanding and Parenting Easily Frustrated, Chronically Inflexible Children

What it's about
Ross Greene argues that children who explode into rage over seemingly small triggers are not manipulative or willfully defiant but are missing specific cognitive skills—flexibility, frustration tolerance, problem-solving—needed to meet certain demands. He replaces reward-and-punishment discipline with a collaborative model for identifying triggers and solving problems jointly with the child. The book mattered because it shifted clinical and school practice away from treating meltdowns as behavior to be punished and toward treating them as symptoms of skill deficits to be addressed.

Who it's for
- Parents whose child has frequent, intense meltdowns that standard discipline has failed to reduce - Teachers and school administrators managing students who escalate during transitions, demands, or frustration - Clinicians and social workers designing behavior plans for children with ADHD, autism, or oppositional patterns
What’s inside
- 1Kids Do Well If They Can1 min
Chronic explosive behavior is not a child choosing defiance but a child lacking the skills to meet a specific demand in the moment.
- 2Lagging Skills, Not Bad Attitude1 min
Meltdowns are triggered by specific, nameable cognitive skill deficits, and naming them precisely is more useful than any diagnostic label.
- 3Why Standard Discipline Backfires1 min
Reward-and-punishment discipline fails explosive children because it demands the very skills those children lack, and repeated failure at that demand escalates rather than reduces explosions.
- 4Three Plans, Not One1 min
Reducing explosions requires deliberately choosing, for each specific unsolved problem, whether to impose (Plan A), collaborate (Plan B), or temporarily let go (Plan C)—treating every demand as equally non-negotiable makes things worse.
- 5Mapping the Actual Triggers1 min
Vague complaints about a child's behavior are not useful; progress depends on writing down specific, observable, recurring situations that precede explosions.
- 6Handling the Explosion in the Moment1 min
During an actual meltdown, the priority is de-escalation through empathy and information-gathering, not correction or consequence, because a child mid-explosion cannot access reasoning or negotiation.
- 7Solving Problems Before They Recur1 min
Durable change comes from working out solutions to recurring triggers in calm moments, well before the next explosion, not from managing each crisis as it happens.
- 8Getting Every Adult Aligned1 min
The approach fails if caregivers, teachers, and other adults around the child are not operating from the same understanding, because inconsistent responses recreate the very confusion the model tries to remove.
- 9What Progress Actually Looks Like1 min
Success should be measured by a falling frequency and intensity of explosions and by skills gradually built, not by an expectation of sudden or complete compliance.
