The Secret of Our Success
How Culture Is Driving Human Evolution, Domesticating Our Species, and Making Us Smarter

What it's about
Joseph Henrich argues that humans dominate the planet not because of superior individual intelligence but because of cumulative culture: the capacity to copy, teach, and improve on each other's ideas across generations. No single brain invented the kayak, the bow, or cassava detoxification; these emerged from collective, trial-and-error accumulation. The book reframes human evolution as a story of gene-culture coevolution, reshaping how we think about intelligence, cooperation, and why isolated groups lose knowledge while connected ones gain it.

Who it's for
- Anyone who assumed human success comes from raw brainpower and wants that assumption tested - Students of evolution, psychology, or anthropology looking for a rigorous alternative to genius-centered accounts of progress - Readers curious why explorers with survival training died in places where local people thrived
What’s inside
- 1Smart Individuals, Dead Explorers1 min
Raw individual intelligence is not what lets humans survive extreme environments; well-equipped, highly capable explorers who ignored local cultural knowledge died where indigenous people thrived.
- 2The Collective Brain1 min
Human cognitive achievement is fundamentally distributed across many minds and generations, so no living person could reconstruct even a modestly complex technology alone.
- 3Cassava, Kayaks and the Ratchet of Cumulative Culture1 min
Sophisticated technologies and food-processing methods are typically not the invention of any single person but the product of small, cumulative modifications across generations that outrun anyone's understanding of why they work.
- 4Learning Who to Copy1 min
Humans evolved specific psychological biases for choosing whom to imitate—favoring the successful, the skilled, and the majority—and these biases do more work than deliberate reasoning in shaping what any person knows.
- 5Culture Rewrites Genes1 min
Cultural practices create new selection pressures strong enough to reshape the human genome, making genes and culture co-authors of human biology rather than culture being a mere byproduct of genetic evolution.
- 6Bigger Groups, Bigger Cultural Repertoires1 min
The amount of cultural knowledge a society can sustain depends on the size and interconnectedness of its social network far more than on the intelligence of its individual members.
- 7Norms, Institutions, and Manufactured Trust1 min
Large-scale cooperation among genetic strangers is possible only because cultural norms and institutions, such as kinship rules and religious systems, manufacture levels of trust that biology alone does not provide.
About Joseph Henrich
Joseph Henrich is an evolutionary biologist and anthropologist who chairs the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He has conducted fieldwork among small-scale societies in the Andes, Fiji, and elsewhere, and co-developed the influential WEIRD psychology critique. His later book, The WEIRDest People in the World, extends the arguments made here.
