What it's about
David Wallace-Wells argues that climate change is not a distant, contained problem but a cascading, near-term catastrophe already reshaping heat, food, water, disease, economics, and politics. Writing as a journalist rather than a scientist, he compiles peer-reviewed projections into a single narrative meant to shock complacent readers, especially in wealthy nations, into recognizing that even 'moderate' warming scenarios carry civilizational risk. The book mattered because it forced mainstream discourse to confront worst-case scientific literature directly.

Who it's for
- Readers who think climate change is primarily a 2100 problem for polar bears, not a 2030s problem for cities - Policy-minded people who want the raw scale of climate science translated into narrative stakes - Anyone who has read cautious IPCC summaries and wants to know what the caution is hiding
What’s inside
- 1Worse Than You Think1 min
Public complacency about climate change persists not because the science is uncertain but because the pace of change has outrun our intuitions about disaster.
- 2The Heat Will Kill You First1 min
Extreme heat, not sea level rise, is the most immediate way large parts of the currently inhabited world could become physically unlivable for parts of the year.
- 3The End of Food1 min
A warming climate does not just shift where food can be grown but shrinks the total capacity of the global system to feed itself, threatening a food supply built on decades of stability.
- 4Drowning1 min
Sea level rise and coastal flooding will displace far more people through repeated, non-catastrophic flooding than through any single dramatic event.
- 5Wildfire and Disaster1 min
Climate change does not create new categories of disaster so much as it intensifies and compounds familiar ones until existing emergency systems cannot keep pace.
- 6Dying Oceans and Poisoned Air1 min
The habitability crisis extends beyond land and weather into the chemistry of oceans and atmosphere, both of which are degrading in ways that directly threaten human and ecological survival.
- 7Economic Collapse1 min
Unmitigated climate change functions as a persistent drag on global wealth creation, potentially erasing a large share of world GDP rather than merely redistributing it geographically.
- 8Climate Conflict1 min
Climate stress acts as a threat multiplier that intensifies existing political and social fractures into violence, rather than causing conflict on its own.
- 9The Failure of Imagination1 min
Human cognitive habits and cultural storytelling are poorly suited to registering a slow-moving, diffuse, global-scale threat, which helps explain persistent underreaction even among informed people.
- 10Politics, Technology, and What Is Left to Do1 min
Because neither technological fixes nor market mechanisms are likely to arrive fast enough on their own, political mobilization to cut emissions directly remains the only reliable lever left.
