What it's about
Randall Munroe, creator of the webcomic xkcd, takes wildly impractical questions from readers — what happens if you pitch a baseball near light speed, or drain the oceans — and answers them using real physics, chemistry, and biology. The book argues that rigorous quantitative reasoning is accessible to anyone willing to estimate, calculate, and follow the numbers wherever they lead, even into catastrophe. It mattered because it made order-of-magnitude thinking entertaining and showed a mass audience what scientists actually do when they reason from first principles.

Who it's for
- Curious readers who loved science as kids but never took a physics class as adults - Fans of xkcd who want the long-form, footnoted version of the webcomic's humor - Teachers and parents looking for concrete, funny examples to explain estimation and scale
What’s inside
- 1The Method Behind the Nonsense1 min
Treating absurd hypothetical questions with full scientific rigor reveals more about how science actually works than most textbook problems do.
- 2When Ordinary Physics Breaks1 min
Pushing an everyday action to a physical extreme shows that human intuition about speed, force, and energy fails badly outside the narrow range we evolved to sense.
- 3Planetary-Scale Thought Experiments1 min
Scenarios that alter Earth's oceans, atmosphere, or rotation show that the planet's habitability rests on a small number of finely balanced physical parameters, not a wide margin for error.
- 4The Fragile and Sturdy Human Body1 min
The human body is far more resilient to some extreme scenarios and far more fragile to others than either fear or bravado would predict.
- 5Scaling Individual Actions to Global Populations1 min
Multiplying an ordinary human action by the world's population usually produces an anticlimax, because individual forces are tiny compared to planetary-scale systems.
- 6Weird and Worrying Questions1 min
Short, deadpan answers to disturbing or nonsensical questions show that brevity and humor are legitimate tools for communicating a scientific verdict, not just comic relief.
- 7Why the Answers Keep Ending in Disaster1 min
The book's answers converge on catastrophe so often because most physical systems humans depend on operate near a threshold, so pushing any input to its extreme tends to cross it.
- 8Estimation as a Democratized Science1 min
The book's deepest claim is that the core skill of physics — quantitative estimation under uncertainty — belongs to anyone willing to look up a number and do the arithmetic, not just to credentialed experts.
About Randall Munroe
Randall Munroe worked as a roboticist for NASA's Langley Research Center before leaving to draw the webcomic xkcd full time. He holds a physics degree and answers reader-submitted hypothetical questions on his blog 'What If?', which became the basis for this book and its sequel, 'What If? 2'.
