Who We Are and How We Got Here
Ancient DNA and the New Science of the Human Past

What it's about
David Reich, a leading ancient-DNA geneticist, argues that genome sequencing of long-dead humans has rewritten the story of our species: massive migrations, wholesale population replacements, and repeated interbreeding between groups once thought separate. The book matters because it turns population genetics into a source of history as rigorous as archaeology or linguistics, while also confronting uncomfortable questions about what genetic variation does and does not tell us about human difference.

Who it's for
- Readers curious about where their ancestors actually came from, beyond family lore - Students of archaeology or linguistics who want to see how genetic evidence confirms or upends existing migration theories - Anyone following the public debate over race, genetics, and biology who wants the science before the politics
What’s inside
- 1DNA Becomes a History Machine1 min
Ancient DNA sequencing has become a more reliable witness to prehistoric migration than archaeology or linguistics alone, because bones don't lie about ancestry the way pots and words can.
- 2We Are Already Mixed: Neanderthals and Denisovans1 min
Modern humans are not a pure lineage that later encountered other species, but interbred with at least two other hominin populations, meaning 'us' and 'them' was never a clean boundary.
- 3Ghost Populations1 min
Populations that left no known skeletal remains can still be detected statistically, because their genetic contribution survives in their descendants even when the ancestors themselves are archaeologically invisible.
- 4Europe Was Repeatedly Repopulated1 min
Modern Europeans descend from at least three successive populations that largely replaced rather than gradually blended with their predecessors, undercutting the idea of continuous, in-place European ancestry.
- 5India's Genetic Split Mirrors Its Caste System1 min
Nearly all present-day Indian populations descend from a single ancient mixture of two very different ancestral groups, and the strength of endogamy since then is written into the genome as a distinctive marker of caste and geography.
- 6The Peopling of the Americas Was Not Simple1 min
Native American ancestry does not come from one clean migration wave but from a founding population that itself split and re-mixed, complicating older stories of a single Beringian crossing.
- 7Genetic Difference Is Real, Small, and Easily Misused1 min
Reich argues that population genetics has revealed genuine average differences between populations, and that refusing to say so publicly cedes the topic to people who will describe it far less carefully.
About David Reich
David Reich is a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School and a pioneer of ancient DNA analysis. His lab has sequenced genomes from thousands of ancient human remains, producing many of the discoveries described in this book, his first for a general audience, published in 2018.
