What it's about
Lulu Miller braids the biography of ichthyologist David Starr Jordan with her own struggle against despair to ask what our need to categorize the world costs us. Jordan named more fish species than anyone in history and rebuilt his life's work after it was destroyed twice. But his story curdles into eugenics and a possible cover-up of murder, and a scientific fact undercuts his life's premise: 'fish' is not a real category. The book matters because it turns a taxonomy footnote into a warning about certainty itself.

Who it's for
- Readers who enjoy narrative nonfiction that fuses science history with personal memoir - People working through depression or nihilism who want a philosophical reframe rather than a self-help checklist - Anyone curious how prestigious institutions like Stanford have hidden complicity in racism and eugenics
What’s inside
- 1A Man Against Chaos1 min
Jordan's lifelong war on disorder made him extraordinarily productive, but the same impulse that let him rebuild after catastrophe also let him ignore the human wreckage he caused.
- 2The Taxonomist's Triumph1 min
Cataloging nature feels like discovering truth, but it is also an act of imposing human convenience onto a world that does not naturally sort itself into our categories.
- 3The Rise to Power1 min
Jordan's ascent to the presidency of Stanford shows that force of personality and unshakeable self-belief, more than being right, is what wins institutions and followers.
- 4The Poisoning1 min
The unresolved, strongly suspicious circumstances of Jane Stanford's 1905 death suggest that Jordan's drive to protect his own institution and reputation may have overridden his commitment to truth entirely.
- 5Eugenics and the Architecture of Hierarchy1 min
The same taxonomic impulse that let Jordan sort fish into species let him sort human beings into a hierarchy of worth, showing that classification is never a neutral act.
- 6Fish Don't Exist1 min
Modern evolutionary biology shows that "fish" is not a coherent natural category at all, which means Jordan spent his life perfecting a taxonomy built on a category error.
- 7Miller's Own Chaos1 min
Personal despair, like Jordan's scientific despair, cannot be solved by forcing false order onto experience, and the attempt to do so is itself a kind of danger.
- 8Weeds and Wonder1 min
Reframing her father's metaphor of human insignificance, Miller argues that being a weed rather than a rare, ranked specimen can be a source of freedom rather than despair.
- 9The Danger of Certainty1 min
The book's ultimate claim is that unwavering confidence, not error itself, is the trait that makes a person capable of doing real harm.
