Born to Run
A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen

What it's about
McDougall investigates why running injures so many modern people while a reclusive Mexican tribe, the Tarahumara, runs vast distances into old age without harm. He argues that humans evolved as endurance runners, that modern cushioned shoes may have broken the natural mechanics that protected us, and that running can be a source of joy rather than punishment. The book blends adventure narrative, physiology, and cultural history into a case for barefoot-style running and a race that tests his thesis.

Who it's for
- Runners plagued by recurring injuries who suspect their gear or form is the problem - Readers who enjoy adventure journalism built around a genuine scientific question - Anyone curious about human evolution and what our bodies were originally built to do
What’s inside
- 1The Injury Paradox1 min
The rise of modern athletic shoe technology correlates with, rather than reduces, chronic running injuries, suggesting the shoes themselves may be part of the problem.
- 2The Tarahumara and the Copper Canyons1 min
An isolated indigenous culture that runs enormous distances for both transport and ritual without chronic injury undermines the assumption that running long distances is inherently damaging to the human body.
- 3The Evolutionary Case: Born to Run1 min
Humans likely evolved persistence hunting as a survival strategy, meaning long-distance running is not an unnatural stress on the body but one of the traits that made humans human.
- 4The Shoe Industry's Role1 min
The introduction and dominance of heavily cushioned, structured running shoes changed how humans strike the ground in ways that may have created, rather than prevented, injury.
- 5Coaching Culture and the Overtraining Trap1 min
Competitive running culture's emphasis on high mileage, aggressive pacing, and pushing through pain compounds the injury risk created by footwear, rather than correcting it.
- 6Caballo Blanco and the Ultrarunning Subculture1 min
A small, eccentric community of ultrarunners has independently rediscovered, through direct experience rather than formal science, many of the same lessons about form, minimalism, and joy that the evolutionary and biomechanical evidence supports.
- 7The Race: Putting the Theory to the Test1 min
Organizing a real 50-mile race between the Tarahumara and elite American ultrarunners serves as the book's practical test of whether traditional running form and minimal footwear hold up under genuine competitive pressure, not just anecdote.
