What it's about
Steve Krug argues that good web and software design lets people accomplish their goals without stopping to figure things out. Usability isn't a luxury feature for designers to add later; it's the difference between a site people use and one they abandon. Krug distills decades of usability testing into plain rules about clarity, navigation, and self-evident design, arguing that most usability problems are obvious once you watch a real person try to use the thing.

Start a circle and share the code — everyone sees everyone's honest place in the book. Accountability, not leaderboards.
Who it's for
- Designers and developers who want a fast, jargon-free way to think about usability - Product managers and founders who keep hearing 'usability' but don't know how to test for it - Anyone tasked with running a website or app who has never watched a stranger try to use it
What’s inside
- 1Don't Make Me Think1 min
Users don't read pages carefully or reason through interfaces methodically; they scan and guess, so the designer's job is to make every choice self-evident rather than merely understandable.
- 2How We Really Use the Web1 min
Users satisfice rather than optimize, clicking the first reasonable-looking option instead of comparing alternatives, which means designs built for careful evaluation are designed for a user who doesn't exist.
- 3Billboard Design 1011 min
A page's visual hierarchy, not its content, is what tells users where to look first, so effective design uses conventions and visual weight the way a highway billboard uses size and contrast to be understood in a glance.
- 4Navigation Is Not an Afterthought1 min
Persistent, well-structured navigation acts like a physical store's signage, telling users where they are and how to get anywhere else, and treating it as decoration rather than infrastructure is a primary cause of user disorientation.
- 5Getting Users to Read the Words1 min
Because scanning is the default behavior, page content should be edited down aggressively, since happy talk and unnecessary instructions actively work against usability rather than merely failing to help.
- 6Why People Think Forms Are Torture1 min
Forms are usability's hardest test case because every field, label, and error message represents a decision point that can stall or lose a user, so forms deserve disproportionate design attention relative to their visual simplicity.
- 7Usability Testing on 10 Cents a Day1 min
Usability testing works best as a small, frequent, low-cost habit rather than a rare, expensive, formal event, because watching even one confused user reveals more than any amount of internal debate.
- 8Usability as Common Courtesy1 min
Good usability functions as a form of respect for the user's time and intelligence, and this ethical framing, not just conversion metrics, is what should motivate organizations to invest in it.
