What it's about
Leslie Chang spent years reporting from Dongguan, the manufacturing boomtown in Guangdong, following two young migrant women to argue that China's assembly-line workers are not passive victims of globalization but active authors of their own reinvention. Interweaving their lives with her own family's migration history, Chang challenges the sweatshop narrative dominant in Western reporting, showing instead a churning world of ambition, self-help seminars, resume fraud, and hard-won independence.

What’s inside
- 1The City That Eats People1 min
Dongguan's scale and churn make it a machine for dissolving old identities rather than simply exploiting cheap labor.
- 2Lying to Get Ahead1 min
Resume fraud among migrant workers is not dishonesty in the ordinary sense but a rational, widely tolerated tool for escaping a rigid hierarchy.
- 3Min's Ascent1 min
Upward mobility for a migrant woman came less from any single factory job than from a sustained, restless refusal to stay put.
- 4The Business of Self-Improvement1 min
An entire aspirational economy of English classes, etiquette lessons, and motivational speakers thrived by selling migrant workers the promise of transformation, whether or not it delivered.
- 5Chunming and the Lure of the Pyramid1 min
Multi-level marketing schemes succeeded among migrant workers precisely because they offered the one thing factory work could not: the feeling of being one's own boss.
- 6Marriage, Family, and the Pull of the Village1 min
Migrant women's independence in the city existed in constant tension with unresolved obligations to marry and support family back home, and neither pull ever fully won.
- 7A Family History of Leaving1 min
The migrant workers of Dongguan are the latest chapter in a much older, recurring Chinese pattern of leaving home to survive political and economic upheaval, one Chang's own family lived through.
- 8Against the Sweatshop Story1 min
The dominant Western narrative of factory girls as exploited victims obscures the more complicated truth that many migrant workers experienced the city as a net gain in freedom and possibility compared to village life.
