What it's about
Random Family follows Jessica, Coco, Boy George, Cesar, and their extended kin through roughly a decade in the South Bronx, tracking love affairs, drug dealing, pregnancies, and prison sentences with almost no authorial commentary. LeBlanc argues, through accumulated detail rather than a stated thesis, that concentrated poverty produces its own internal logic: love, motherhood, and hustling all become rational responses to scarce options. The book mattered because it made urban poverty legible as lived experience rather than statistic, reshaping how journalists and policymakers talked about the so-called underclass.

Who it's for
- Readers of narrative nonfiction who want immersive reporting rather than argument-driven analysis. - Social workers, policy analysts, and journalists covering poverty, incarceration, or the drug war. - Anyone questioning simple explanations for teenage pregnancy, addiction, or crime in poor urban neighborhoods.
What’s inside
- 1The Only Growth Industry in the Neighborhood1 min
In a neighborhood stripped of factory jobs and stable wages, the crack trade offered the only reliable path to money, respect, and protection that legitimate work could not match.
- 2Being Chosen1 min
For Jessica, attaching herself to a powerful man functioned as a calculated strategy for security and status, not simply romantic infatuation.
- 3Fourteen and Becoming Somebody1 min
For a girl with almost no institutional path to adult status, early motherhood can function as the fastest available route to purpose, not mainly as an accident of recklessness.
- 4The Long Sentence1 min
Mass incarceration operates in this world as a routine, expected life stage that reorganizes family life around visits and commissary money, rather than as a rare disruption.
- 5The Paperwork of Poverty1 min
Public assistance systems meant to provide stability instead consume time and dignity through relentless procedural demands, undermining the very stability they claim to offer.
- 6Random Family1 min
Households in this world hold together not through the nuclear family but through improvised networks of grandmothers, aunts, and neighbors who absorb each other's children, which is the arrangement the book's title names directly.
- 7Mercedes and the Next Generation1 min
The repetition of early pregnancy and absent fathers across generations reflects the durability of an environment's available script for adulthood, not a failure of individual character passed down like a trait.
