What it's about
Bissinger spent the 1988 season embedded with the Permian High School Panthers of Odessa, Texas, to understand why a town devastated by the oil bust poured its identity, money, and hope into teenage football players. The book argues that high school football in places like Odessa functions as a substitute economy of meaning, one that rewards boys for their bodies, ignores their futures, and exposes the racial and class fault lines the town would rather not see.

What’s inside
- 1Mojo: A Town Built on Football1 min
A community can outsource its sense of self-worth so completely to a high school team that the team's record becomes the town's own report card.
- 2Boom, Bust, and the Need for Something to Believe In1 min
Economic collapse makes a town more likely, not less, to inflate the importance of a local team, because the team offers an emotional payoff the economy no longer can.
- 3Boobie Miles and the Price of Being Useful1 min
When a school values a talented poor kid only for what his body can produce on the field, an injury doesn't just end his season, it reveals the appreciation was conditional all along.
- 4The Tracks Still Divide the Town1 min
A team can look integrated on the field while the town around it stays segregated in practice, and that contrast lets the community mistake diversity in uniform for racial equality in daily life.
- 5Grades Optional1 min
A school that spends far more on its stadium than on its classrooms is teaching its students, more honestly than any mission statement, what actually matters to the adults in charge.
- 6Carrying Someone Else's Dream1 min
Teenage players on a team like Permian aren't just playing a game, they're absorbing the emotional and financial expectations of adults whose needs have little to do with the players themselves.
- 7The Coach Nobody Envies1 min
Gary Gaines' job effectively made him responsible for an entire town's self-esteem, a demand that no single person should be expected to satisfy and that guarantees he will eventually fail someone.
- 8The Season Ends, the Town Doesn't1 min
The town's obsessive need for football turns out not to be about winning at all, since the ritual and the anxiety return in full force the very next season regardless of how the previous one ended.
- 9After the Lights Go Out1 min
The gap between how a star player is treated at seventeen and how he's treated a few years later shows how little of the celebration was ever really about him.
