The Mavericks Who Brought AI to Google, Facebook, and the World

What it's about
Cade Metz traces how a small band of academic outsiders revived neural networks after decades of dismissal, then watched their ideas get absorbed by Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and a new wave of startups. The book argues that deep learning's rise was driven as much by personal rivalries, talent wars, and corporate money as by pure scientific insight, and that the resulting concentration of AI power in a handful of companies raises questions society is still working out.

Who it's for
- Readers curious how a handful of researchers ended up controlling technology that now shapes daily life - Tech workers and founders who want the real backstory behind AI hype cycles - Anyone trying to understand why AI ethics debates erupted inside Google and Facebook
What’s inside
- 1The Believers Who Wouldn't Quit1 min
Deep learning survived only because a few researchers, especially Geoffrey Hinton, refused to abandon neural networks during decades when the mainstream AI field considered them a dead end.
- 2The Cat That Changed Everything1 min
The 2012 ImageNet competition proved almost overnight that neural networks, once fed enough data and computing power, could beat every rival technique at recognizing images.
- 3The Auction for a Professor's Company1 min
Google's 2013 acquisition of Hinton's tiny startup, won through a bidding war against Baidu and Microsoft, revealed how fast corporate money could convert academic credibility into a commercial asset.
- 4The Talent War Concentrates Power1 min
The bidding war for AI researchers concentrated deep learning expertise inside a handful of companies, undermining the open academic culture that had produced the field's breakthroughs in the first place.
- 5AlphaGo and the DeepMind Bet1 min
DeepMind's 2016 victory over Lee Sedol proved reinforcement learning could master problems long thought to require human intuition, but the achievement also became a marketing symbol that inflated expectations for AI more broadly.
- 6OpenAI's Attempt to Break the Monopoly1 min
OpenAI was founded in 2015 specifically to prevent AI power from concentrating inside Google, yet its own later shift toward secrecy and profit shows how hard that goal was to sustain.
