What it's about
Steven Levy traces the culture of early computer programmers from MIT's Tech Model Railroad Club in the late 1950s through the rise of home computers and video games in the early 1980s. He argues these hackers shared an ethic—free access to information, mistrust of authority, judgment by skill alone, and belief that computers could improve life—and that this ethic, more than any business plan, built the foundations of personal computing.

Who it's for
- Programmers and engineers who want to understand where their profession's values came from - Readers curious about Silicon Valley's origin myths before they became corporate legend - Anyone who wants a ground-level history of computing that isn't about Steve Jobs or Bill Gates alone
What’s inside
- 1The Railroad Club Origins1 min
The hacker ethic did not emerge from business or academia but from a model train club's obsession with switching systems, which shows that technical cultures form around play before they form around profit.
- 2The Ethic Takes Shape1 min
The hacker ethic functioned as an unwritten code that valued skill over credentials, and this meritocratic ideal let brilliant outsiders matter more than official titles ever could.
- 3Greenblatt, Gosper, and the True Hackers1 min
The AI Lab's culture proved that a self-organizing group with no formal hierarchy could out-innovate structured institutions, but only because a small set of geniuses tolerated extreme personal sacrifice.
- 4The Ethic Meets the Market1 min
When hacking moved from university labs to hobbyist garages in the 1970s, the same ethic that built free software also collided immediately with the question of who gets paid.
- 5Building the Machine for the People1 min
The hobbyist hackers succeeded commercially only when they translated the ethic's spirit, ease of access and personal control, into a physical product ordinary people could buy, which shows the ethic could survive commercialization if not its letter.
- 6The Game Hackers of Sierra and Beyond1 min
The third generation of hackers, game designers in the early 1980s, showed that the ethic's love of clever, elegant systems could translate directly into mass entertainment, but only by accepting the commercial logic the original hackers had resisted.
- 7The Last of the True Hackers1 min
By the early 1980s the original AI Lab hacker community had effectively dissolved under commercial pressure, proving that the ethic could not survive indefinitely without an institutional shelter from market forces.
