What it's about
Harari's follow-up to Sapiens argues that humanity, having largely tamed famine, plague, and war, is now turning its ambitions toward immortality, engineered happiness, and god-like power over biology. The book traces how liberal humanism became our dominant belief system and asks whether it can survive an age of artificial intelligence and biotechnology that may render both free will and human uniqueness obsolete. It mattered because it pushed pop-science readers to treat AI and biotech as civilizational, not just economic, questions.

- A reader who enjoyed Sapiens and wants Harari's view of where the human story goes next - A technologist or policymaker who needs a sweeping frame for thinking about AI, biotech, and inequality - Anyone questioning whether liberal ideas about individual worth can survive automation
What’s inside
- 1The Old Agenda, Completed1 min
Harari claims humanity has, for the first time in history, effectively tamed famine, plague, and war, closing out the ancient survival agenda.
- 2The New Agenda: Immortality, Bliss, Divinity1 min
Harari argues that the twenty-first century's implicit project is to defeat death, engineer permanent happiness, and upgrade humans into a more powerful species.
- 3Cooperation Runs on Shared Fictions1 min
Harari argues that all large-scale human cooperation, from money to nations to human rights, depends entirely on collectively believed stories with no objective existence.
- 4Humanism Replaces God1 min
Harari argues that when traditional religion lost its grip on Western societies, humans did not abandon religious thinking but redirected ultimate authority from God to human feelings and experience.
- 5Three Humanisms Fought for the Twentieth Century1 min
Harari argues liberal democracy triumphed over rival humanisms like Nazism and Soviet socialism not because it was the truest philosophy but because it fit industrial-era technology and warfare best.
- 6You Are an Algorithm, Not a Free Agent1 min
Harari argues that neuroscience shows free will and the unified self are illusions, and that humans are best understood as biochemical algorithms rather than autonomous authors of their choices.
- 7The Rise of the Useless Class1 min
Harari argues that as AI outperforms humans in more cognitive and physical tasks, large portions of humanity risk becoming economically irrelevant, not just temporarily unemployed.
- 8Techno-Humanism and the End of a Shared Species1 min
Harari argues that biotechnology could fracture humanity into an upgraded elite and an unenhanced majority, ending the assumption of fundamental human equality.
- 9Dataism: A New Religion of Information Flow1 min
Harari argues that a new worldview, which he calls Dataism, is emerging to displace humanism by treating the free flow of information, rather than human experience, as the highest value.
- 10Three Open Questions, Not Predictions1 min
Harari closes by arguing the future is genuinely undetermined, and that our answers to a few basic questions about intelligence, consciousness, and value will decide humanity's trajectory.
