What it's about
Greger argues that the leading causes of death in wealthy nations—heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses—are largely diet-driven and largely reversible through a whole-food, plant-based diet. Drawing on thousands of peer-reviewed studies, he contends mainstream medicine treats symptoms with drugs and surgery while ignoring the dietary root causes, and that specific foods can outperform pharmaceuticals in preventing the diseases that kill most people.

Who it's for
- Someone recently diagnosed with a chronic condition like diabetes or heart disease who wants an alternative to lifelong medication - A health-conscious reader who wants the underlying science behind plant-based diet claims, not just recipes - A caregiver or family member trying to help a relative avoid the disease that runs in their family
What’s inside
- 1Disease by Disease, Not by Symptom1 min
Organizing the book around the fifteen leading causes of death, rather than around diets or nutrients, forces a more honest reckoning with how much of modern mortality is preventable through food.
- 2Heart Disease Is Optional1 min
Coronary artery disease is not an inevitable consequence of aging but a diet-caused condition that can be prevented and even reversed by eliminating animal fat and processed food.
- 3Cancer Responds to What You Don't Eat as Much as What You Do1 min
Cancer risk is shaped less by miracle superfoods than by avoiding animal protein, processed meat, and specific carcinogens formed in cooking meat at high heat.
- 4Diabetes Is Driven by Fat Inside Cells, Not Just Sugar1 min
Type 2 diabetes results primarily from intramyocellular fat blocking insulin signaling, which means a low-fat, plant-based diet can be more effective than sugar restriction alone.
- 5The Body Heals Faster Than Expected, But Not Instantly1 min
Dietary change can produce measurable physiological reversal within weeks, which matters because it counters the assumption that chronic disease is a one-way, permanent decline.
- 6The Daily Dozen Replaces Calorie Counting with a Checklist1 min
A short checklist of food categories to consume daily is more sustainable and effective for long-term health than calorie counting or micronutrient tracking.
