What it's about
Bruce Chatwin's 1977 travel narrative follows his journey through the remote southern tip of South America, ostensibly in search of a scrap of mylodon skin his grandmother kept in a cabinet. The book argues that Patagonia's real substance lies not in landscape but in the exiles, outlaws, and dreamers it has absorbed for a century, and it pioneered a fragmentary, novelistic style of travel writing that mixed reportage, oral history, and invention, reshaping the genre and provoking lasting debate about where travel writing's truth-telling obligations end.

Who it's for
- Readers who love travel writing that reads like fiction rather than a guidebook - Writers interested in how compressed, fragmentary prose can carry historical and anthropological weight - Anyone curious about the exiles, outlaws, and lost colonies that ended up at the world's remotest edges
What’s inside
- 1The Inherited Myth1 min
A trivial family relic can justify a serious journey, because obsession is as legitimate a compass as scholarship or purpose.
- 2A Landscape That Attracts Extremity1 min
Remoteness itself, not economic opportunity, is what has drawn Patagonia's disproportionate share of fanatics, fugitives, and dreamers.
- 3The World's Dumping Ground for Lost Causes1 min
Patagonia served, for much of the twentieth century, as a refuge where defeated political and personal causes could pretend to start over.
- 4New Wales and the Frozen Culture1 min
A transplanted community, cut off from its homeland, tends to preserve an intensified, almost fossilized version of the culture it left rather than a faithfully evolving one.
- 5Outlaws at the End of the World1 min
Patagonia's remoteness gave American outlaws like Butch Cassidy a genuine second act, not just a hiding place, before the reach of modern law finally caught up with them.
- 6The Massacre the History Books Left Out1 min
Official national histories systematically erase episodes of organized labor violence, and oral testimony can recover what documents were designed to bury.
- 7Giants, Sloths, and the Manufacture of Myth1 min
Patagonia's reputation as a land of giants and monsters was less a discovery about the place than a self-perpetuating literary tradition, each traveler amplifying the last.
- 8Darwin's Shadow and the Cost of Discovery1 min
The scientific mapping of Patagonia proceeded hand in hand with the destruction of the indigenous peoples it studied, and one cannot be celebrated without reckoning with the other.
- 9Truth Told as Collage1 min
A place's character is better rendered through accumulated, juxtaposed fragments of anecdote than through a single continuous explanatory narrative.
- 10Arrival Without Resolution1 min
The value of a quest lies in what is accumulated along the way, not in the moment of reaching the object originally sought.
About Bruce Chatwin
Bruce Chatwin (1940-1989) worked as an art expert at Sotheby's and later as a journalist for the Sunday Times Magazine before abandoning both careers to travel and write. In Patagonia was his first book and established the elliptical, fact-and-fiction-blending style he developed further in The Songlines and On the Black Hill.
