What it's about
Nir Eyal argues that chronic distraction is not caused by seductive technology but by an unaddressed urge to escape uncomfortable internal states like boredom, loneliness, and anxiety. He offers a four-part method: master internal triggers, schedule time for what you value, hack back external cues, and use precommitment pacts to prevent slipping. The book mattered because it arrived after years of alarm about phones and social media, reframing focus as a trainable skill rather than a battle against evil design.
Reading plan
Pick a finish date and Genius lays out the days — the plan shows today's target and keeps you honest.
Read together
Start a circle and share the code — everyone sees everyone's honest place in the book. Accountability, not leaderboards.
Who it's for
- A knowledge worker who checks email or chat every few minutes and can't explain why. - A manager trying to build a team culture that doesn't reward constant busyness and interruptibility. - A parent anxious about a child's screen time who wants evidence-based guidance instead of panic.
What’s inside
- 1Distraction Starts Inside You1 min
The real driver of distraction is the urge to escape an uncomfortable internal state, not the pull of your phone.
- 2Traction and Distraction Are Not Fixed Categories1 min
A behavior only counts as distraction if it pulls you away from something you deliberately intended to do, so the same action can be traction for one person and distraction for another.
- 3Turning Values Into Time1 min
A calendar built around your values, not a to-do list, is the necessary tool for knowing when you have actually been distracted.
- 4Reframing the Urge Instead of Fighting It1 min
Distraction is beaten less by willpower than by specific mental reframing techniques, because willpower as a depletable resource is largely a myth.
- 5Auditing and Hacking External Triggers1 min
Most external triggers are not inherently harmful, but they must be deliberately audited, because unexamined signals hijack attention by default.
- 6Precommitment Through Pacts1 min
Precommitment devices work by raising the cost of giving in before the moment of temptation, when willpower is already weakest.
- 7Distraction as an Organizational Problem1 min
Workplace distraction is often a symptom of unclear roles and an always-on culture rather than a simple failure of individual willpower.
- 8Raising Indistractable Children1 min
Much of the alarm over children and screen addiction is disproportionate to the evidence, and modeling good behavior works better than restriction alone.
- 9Distraction Pacts With the People You Love1 min
Close relationships need explicit, negotiated agreements about device use, because unspoken assumptions about phone use during shared time quietly erode trust.
About Nir Eyal
Nir Eyal previously wrote Hooked (2014), a widely used guide teaching companies to build habit-forming products, and taught at Stanford's Graduate School of Business. His background in behavioral design and consumer psychology, plus his own struggles with distraction as a writer and parent, led him to write Indistractable as a corrective aimed at individuals rather than product teams.
