What it's about
The ONE Thing argues that success comes from narrowing effort to a single priority rather than spreading it across many goals. Using a repeatable focusing question, the authors show how to identify the one action that makes other tasks easier or unnecessary, then sequence small steps like dominoes toward larger outcomes. Published in 2013, the book became a bestseller by challenging multitasking, balanced-life ideals, and willpower-driven discipline as obstacles to focused achievement, influencing later popular productivity writing.

Who it's for
- Professionals and entrepreneurs drowning in long to-do lists who want a method for choosing what to drop. - Managers and freelancers with real discretion over their schedules who are ready to trade breadth for depth. - Readers skeptical of multitasking and balance culture who want a framework, not just motivation, for saying no.
What’s inside
- 1The Focusing Question1 min
Success is not the result of doing many things adequately, but of finding the single action that makes the largest number of other actions unnecessary.
- 2The Domino Effect1 min
Correctly sequenced small actions, not dramatic leaps, are what produce results disproportionate to their size.
- 3The Lie That Everything Matters Equally1 min
A to-do list that treats every task as equally worth doing actively works against the one task that matters most.
- 4The Multitasking Myth1 min
What feels like doing two things at once is really rapid switching, and every switch has a measurable cost.
- 5The Discipline Myth1 min
You do not need broad, permanent discipline; you need enough discipline briefly to build one habit, which then carries the behavior for you.
- 6Willpower Is Not Always On Will-Call1 min
Willpower is a finite resource that runs down through the day, so the most important task belongs in the earliest, least-depleted hours, not whenever there is spare time.
- 7The Balanced Life Myth1 min
Trying to give every area of life equal attention every day guarantees mediocrity everywhere rather than excellence anywhere.
- 8The Lie That Big Is Bad1 min
Fear of setting a goal that looks unreasonable, not the size of the goal itself, is what caps most people's achievement.
- 9Purpose, Priority, and Time Blocking1 min
The whole method only works if the ONE Thing is defended on the calendar like an unmovable appointment, not treated as an intention.
