What it's about
Tim Wu traces the history of how advertisers, media companies, and tech platforms have captured and resold human attention for over a century. He argues that attention is a resource that gets harvested the way land or oil once did, and that this harvesting has recurring patterns of overreach followed by public backlash. The book matters because it names and historicizes a business model — the sale of human attention — that now underpins most of the internet economy.

Who it's for
- Anyone who feels their phone controls their day more than they control it - Marketers and product designers who want the history behind engagement metrics - Readers of media history curious how advertising evolved from posters to algorithms
What’s inside
- 1The First Grab: Posters, Patent Medicine, and the Penny Press1 min
The commercial capture of attention began not with digital technology but with 19th-century print, when publishers like Benjamin Day discovered that selling papers cheap and ads dear was more profitable than selling news itself.
- 2Radio and the Birth of the Broadcast Model1 min
Radio converted a communal, in-home medium into an advertising vehicle by inventing the idea that programming's real purpose was to deliver an audience to a sponsor, a model that would define all subsequent mass media.
- 3Television and the Golden Age of the Captive Living Room1 min
Television achieved an unprecedented concentration of attention within the home, and its 'golden age' was less about creative ambition than about the fact that families had no alternative but to watch what the three networks offered.
- 4The Backlash Craft: Resistance Advertising and Counterculture Marketing1 min
When audiences grow weary of being sold to, the most effective response from advertisers is not retreat but repackaging rebellion itself as a sellable identity.
- 5Cable, Narrowcasting, and the Fragmentation of the Mass Audience1 min
Cable television broke the mass audience into niches, and this fragmentation, often celebrated as consumer choice, was actually a more efficient method of attention harvesting because it let advertisers target buyers with precision impossible in the broadcast era.
- 6The Internet's Broken Promise: From Open Web to Portal Wars1 min
The early internet was imagined as a liberation from attention merchants, but it was quickly recolonized by the same commercial logic, first through crude banner ads and portals, then through more insidious means.
- 7Google, Search, and the Invention of Relevance as a Business Model1 min
Google's real innovation was not search quality but the discovery that ads could be sold as useful information rather than intrusive interruption, which made attention capture feel like a service rather than an extraction.
- 8Facebook, the News Feed, and the Weaponization of Social Validation1 min
Facebook's news feed succeeded because it monetized not information but social approval itself, engineering a feedback loop of likes and notifications that made checking the app compulsive rather than optional.
- 9The Body as the Last Frontier: Attention, Health, and the Self1 min
As screens moved from shared living rooms to individual pockets, attention capture became a constant, personal condition rather than an occasional transaction, raising the stakes from annoyance to a genuine crisis of self-governance.
