What it's about
The Cuckoo's Egg tells the true story of how Cliff Stoll, an astronomer turned reluctant systems administrator at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, traced a 75-cent accounting error to a hacker breaking into US military computers on behalf of the KGB. The book argues that the openness of the 1980s internet, built on academic trust rather than security, left it wide open to exploitation, and that catching an international digital intruder required patience, paper records, and cooperation across institutions and countries unprepared for the crime.

Who it's for
- Technology professionals curious about the origins of incident response, honeypots, and network forensics - General readers who enjoy true-crime narratives that cross into Cold War espionage - Students of internet history who want to see how trust-based academic networks became targets
What’s inside
- 1A 75-Cent Mystery1 min
Tiny, boring financial discrepancies are often the only visible symptom of a much larger security failure, and dismissing them as noise is a mistake.
- 2An Internet Built on Trust1 min
The openness that made the 1980s research internet valuable to scientists is the same openness that made it defenseless against a patient intruder.
- 3The Logbook as Weapon1 min
Old-fashioned paper record keeping can outperform digital logs when the adversary you are chasing knows how to erase digital traces.
- 4Knocking on Locked Doors1 min
In the 1980s, bureaucratic incentives and unclear legal categories were a bigger obstacle to catching a hacker than any technical limitation.
- 5Following the Wire1 min
Tracing a digital intrusion in the 1980s meant physically reconstructing a telephone and network path that had no built-in mechanism for recording its own origin.
- 6Building a Honeypot1 min
Deliberately feeding an intruder convincing but fabricated information can reveal more, and do less damage, than simply cutting off his access.
- 7Crossing Borders1 min
Catching a hacker operating across national networks ultimately depends on legal cooperation between sovereign systems that were never built for instant cross-border evidence sharing.
- 8The Man Behind the Screen1 min
The hacker's actual profile, an unremarkable programmer motivated mainly by money, undercuts the romantic image of a lone genius spy.
- 9Arrest, Trial, and Ambiguous Justice1 min
Legal systems in the late 1980s lagged so far behind computer crime that even a well-documented espionage case produced only mild consequences.
- 10What the Cuckoo Taught Cyberspace1 min
The case exposed that digital networks blur personal privacy, corporate systems, and national security together in ways that policy in the 1980s had not caught up with.
About Cliff Stoll
Cliff Stoll holds a PhD in astrophysics from the University of Arizona and worked as an astronomer and systems administrator at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory during the events described. His year-long pursuit of a network intruder in 1986-1988 made him one of the first civilians to document real-world cyberespionage in detail, and he later became known for public science lectures and inventions like the Klein bottle.
