What it's about
Don Norman argues that when people struggle to use objects, the fault lies with the design, not the user. Doors that confuse, stoves with mismatched knobs, and thermostats no one understands all fail because designers ignore how humans actually perceive and act. Good design makes the right actions obvious and the wrong ones hard, using visible cues rather than manuals. The book reframed design as a discipline grounded in cognitive science, influencing product design, software interfaces, and industrial design for decades.

Who it's for
- Product designers and engineers who want a vocabulary for why users make 'mistakes' - Managers who approve designs and need to spot usability problems before launch - Curious readers who want to understand why everyday objects frustrate them
What’s inside
- 1The Psychology of Everyday Actions1 min
Most 'user error' is actually designer error, because designers build objects that misrepresent how they work.
- 2The Seven Stages of Action1 min
Every action a person takes with an object passes through distinct cognitive stages, and design fails when it breaks the feedback loop connecting them.
- 3Affordances and Signifiers1 min
An object's usability depends less on what actions are physically possible with it than on what actions are visibly suggested by it.
- 4Mapping and Its Natural Forms1 min
The spatial and structural relationship between controls and their effects should mirror the relationship between the actions and the results in the real world.
- 5Feedback and the Cost of Silence1 min
An action without prompt, informative feedback leaves the user stranded in the Gulf of Evaluation, no matter how good the initial signifiers were.
- 6Conceptual Models and the Designer-User Gap1 min
Usability problems recur because designers, engineers, and users each build different mental models of the same device, and only the user's model is invisible to the people who built it.
- 7The Structure of Human Error1 min
Human errors fall into distinct categories with distinct causes, and design should anticipate and absorb them rather than assume they won't happen.
- 8Design in the World of Real Constraints1 min
Good design principles routinely lose out in practice to cost, aesthetics, competitive pressure, and corporate incentives that don't reward usability.
- 9Human-Centered Design as a Process1 min
Good design results from an iterative, empirical process of observing real users and testing prototypes, not from a single flash of designer insight.
About Don Norman
Don Norman is a cognitive scientist and usability engineer who taught at UC San Diego and Northwestern, and later worked as a vice president at Apple, where he helped popularize the term 'user experience.' He co-founded the Nielsen Norman Group, a leading UX consultancy.
